Barter Detroit

A Place Where Arts and Craft (Cocktails) Meet

We are raising funds to build a gathering space where local artists and art lovers alike can imbibe and create. A community arts and performance space, featuring an approachable craft cocktail bar.

     Hamtramck, MI, United States
    This is a Fiscally-Sponsored Project

    Fiscally Sponsored by Fractured Atlas

Help us get this show on the road and be an integral part of something special!
We are so excited to get this project off the ground - but friends:
    • Opening a theatre is EXPENSIVE.
    • Opening a bar is REALLY EXPENSIVE
    • Opening a bar that also has a dedicated theatre space in it - SUPER EXPENSIVE.
    • Opening a bar that also has a dedicated theatre space in it, that in the past had been a travel agency - REALLY CRAZY STUPID EXPENSIVE.
-We are of course, doing that last one.

So we need a little help. Between personal investment, lots (and lots) of personal loans, and a ton of sweat equity, we've been able to:
    • Lease an amazing space on Joseph Campau in Hamtramck, MI.
    • Assemble a fierce team of architects, engineers, contractors, lawyers and accountants.
    • We bought a liquor license! (Which in Michigan is no easy feat let me tell you!)
    • We've put together an aesthetically fun (and comfy!) interior design plan
    • We made a website (check it out at barterdetroit.com) and signed up for social media @barterdetroit.
    • Got the hammer swinging and demoed out the space.

Now we need a little help to get some of the most important things for our space:
    • If we raise another $5000 we can purchase amazing backline equipment (so our artists don't have to lug their own!)
    • If we raise another $15000 after that we can commission an amazing bar top, custom made by local Michigan woodwork artisans!
    • If we raise another $20000 after that, we can install a proper theatrical lighting grid with all new instruments and a first rate lighting console!
    • And if we raise another $35000 after that we can cover the expense of making our space truly ADA accessible (something it currently is not), with two brand new bathrooms and proper front and rear door access. We want everyone to be able to enjoy our shows, have a drink at our bar, or perform in our space.

The Detroit area has long been a hub of art, music and culture and we're excited to make our new home in Hamtramck, with its rich cultural history and thriving arts community. We believe in creating opportunities to keep world-class artists here at the beginning of their careers. We are creating a space for emerging artists to craft innovative and imaginative work for the community. Barter will provide a new venue for these artists to connect with the public - and have a great drink or two while they’re at it!

    Meet The Team:
The three of us Co-Founders have diverse backgrounds, each bringing our own expertise as well as passion for theatre arts and music.

    Jennifer Sandella: Operations
A theatre nerd with a love for crafting (and consuming) cocktails, Jennifer has spent her life in the theatre and the past 10 years in hospitality and bar management. She is currently the Artistic Director of Random Access Theatre, and the Beverage Director for Burger and Lobster USA. She's a director, producer, and (sometimes) actor, bartender, menu designer, and lover of all things gin.

    Cait Pluto: Outreach and Marketing
Born in Chicago, and making it to Michigan via Indiana, Idaho and NYC, Cait has a background in dance and journalism and has spent the past decade focusing her creative talents in brand/PR, social media and growth marketing. She has worked for companies such as ABC News 20/20, Tiffany & Co., Equinox, ClassPass, Rent the Runway, KidPass.

Jake Goodrich: Finance and Business Affairs
A failed musician and true believer in the production quality of Third Eye Blind’s first album, Jake hopes to share his passion for music and help musicians succeed.  A Michigan native, Jake grew up in a (unbelievably) small town before heading to Central Michigan University, and then onto NYC for a handful of years before coming back to Detroit. His background in the tech industry includes business development, product and building new revenue streams. In his own words: "If you think about it, UB40 is pretty underrated."

Becoming a Part of the Community
We want BAR/TER to be a fully integrated part of Hamtramck, the city we call home. Our goal is to create an artistic living room for local artists and the community alike.

    • Support local artists via work-study “bartership” program where supplemental skills such as bartending, visual artistry and set design can be performed in exchange for rehearsal and performance space. This is a unique opportunity that directly supports bar/ter’s mission and brand.

    • Support local patrons and businesses by offering a locals’ discount, while providing space for community events (book clubs, senior meetings, fundraisers) along with cross-promotion and partnerships.

    • Our space will be open to artists during the day for rehearsals, readings, meetings on a sliding scale basis. We will work with budgets of all shapes and sizes!

    Who We're Doing this For:
We're opening this space for music/theatre/art enthusiasts, those with a penchant for a stellar cocktail, local artists trying to develop their craft, or for someone simply looking for a welcoming neighborhood place to throw back beer and a shot after work.

From acoustic open mic and comedy nights to punk bands, local art exhibits and theatrical productions, Barter will have something for everybody:
    • Music
    • Comedy
    • Art Exhibits
    • Performance Art
    • Theatre
    • Or whatever our artists' imaginations bring to the table!
