The Idea Behind Colored Her A Lady

Founder, Red Stowall discusses the idea behind Colored Her A Lady and her reasoning behind creating the work.

    Our First Donor!!

Thank you to Nancy Krueger and an anonymous donor for the first donors to our campaign.
    History

Erika 'Red' Stowall started creating dancing with a few close colleagues Fall of 2010.  It was her way of transitioning back to choreography after a 3 year hiatus. At the time, Red was exploring many different aesthetic and creating works which interested her. When Red first started this journey, it was not her intention to begin a dance company. However, when Red was in the studio with her dancers, she felt free and was exciting about continuing the work as a full-time career.  The company was official founded in January 2011, debuting their first pieces, titled 'Mad and Madder'. Big Red Wall Dance Company has been active in the Metro-Detroit Area since then, presenting an evening of full-length work bi-annually.

    Project

                    Colored Her A Lady:
Big Red Wall Dance is cultivating an original work, which first premiered in 2016.  Colored Her A Lady explores the term 'lady' and how the definition changes within cultures, race and religions. Over the next few months the company will dive into what society deems a lady and how the word is viewed throughout Black culture. Our task is to take the original finished piece, which is under 30 minutes long, and develop a full-length work.

lady:  a woman having proprietary rights or authority especially as a feudal superior; a woman of superior social position; a woman of refinement and gentle manners.

With your help, we hope to present the completed work in April 2018.  Big Red Wall Dance Company is a non-profit organization sponsored by Fractured Atlas and the company runs on donations and contribution from the community.  With your contribution, the company plans to re-premiere the completed works over a weekend in Detroit, eventually tour the work around the States.
