When Archbishop Desmond Tutu invited me to film his life and work, I thought I was going to be making a film about justice. But he had a different intention: to persuade people around the world to forgive the unforgivable.     - Karen Hayes, Filmmaker

THE FOOLISHNESS OF GOD: Risking Forgiveness with Desmond Tutu, takes viewers on a global journey revealing Desmond Tutu’s peacemaking process. Following Tutu intimately, the filmmaker and audience are thrust into an uncomfortable world where Tutu asks that atrocities be forgiven. Intimate access to this spiritual leader offers insight into his thinking as he tries to persuade us to let go of traditional notions of justice and punishment, in order to foster personal healing and coexistence.

    UBUNTU EMBODIED

On July 18th, Nelson Mandela would have turned 100 years old.  Both he Desmond Tutu taught frequently about the African concept of UBUNTU, often translated as "I am because we are," and requiring that this connection guide our treatment of each other as human beings. This value imbued their work, as they both pursued nonviolent means to topple apartheid, modeled forgiveness of perpetrators after liberation, and designed and led a Truth and Reconciliation Commission which continues to be studied and replicated around the world as a form of restorative justice.  This film tells this dynamic story in a new way – via a personal journey with Desmond Tutu.

                                                             **BACKGROUND **
DESMOND TUTU, Nobel Peace Laureate and the Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town
, was an instrumental leader in dismantling South African apartheid. His use of non-violent tactics such as mass marches, boycotts, and sanctions helped the county avoid civil war. In 1995, President Nelson Mandela appointed Tutu to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Since then, through his work with The Elders, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation and other organizations, he continues to be a courageous voice for peace with justice.
