    Ensemble Ipse 2017-18 Season

Ensemble Ipse's 2017-18 Season, featuring new commissions and premieres, a exhibition concert of Latin American composers, and introducing our "Site Works" and "Performer Portraits" series.

     New York, NY
Ensemble Ipse is proud to launch its 2017-18 season with several exciting events:

-A concert of Latin American Composers guest curated by Ricardo Gallo (more below), several "Performer Portrait" concerts featuring our renowned instrumentalists (listed below)  and "Site Works", a series of open form/instrumentation concerts presented in unique spaces around NYC which are free to the public.

    Latin American Composers Concert:

In collaboration with acclaimed composer/pianist Ricardo Gallo, Ensemble Ipse will present two concerts focusing on music by Latin American composers who work in the classical, jazz, and experimental idioms.

Many Latin American countries have a long tradition of hybridizing Western and indigenous musics - the area is a hotbed of idea-sharing, and the results are wildly compelling, socially relevant, and make a connection with all different sorts of audiences.  This vibrant collection of cultures is not often enough represented in contemporary music programming in the U.S. and we hope our series will bring greater, and much deserved, attention to it.

One concert will focus on pieces in the classical and experimental traditions and will feature a commission by Ricardo, as well as another commissioned piece by a composer residing in a Latin American country. The other works on the program will be chosen from existing works by living composers of Latin American origin who are living in the U.S., as well as those who are living in Latin America.  In keeping with Ipse's commitment to aesthetic diversity, we will present a program that represents the broad range of cultural influences that can be found throughout Latin America.  For the second concert, Ensemble Ipse will present Ricardo's jazz ensemble, and a second group chosen in collaboration with Ricardo. This show will consist of two sets.

    "Site Works" Series:

"Site Works" is a community centered project dedicated to presenting works of long duration, open form, or open instrumentation. Each concert will be site specific and designed to take advantage of the unique acoustic qualities of a specific location or space. These performances will be open to the public free of charge and, in some instances, members of the community will be invited to perform with the core members of Ensemble Ipse. In general, the goal of these performances is to provide an opportunity for community members to experience what may be a familiar space in a completely different way.

    "Performer Portrait" Series:

Ipse will present several concerts which highlight our fantastic performers in duo and trios, and in more intimate and informal settings.

Both Joseph and Max received their Ph.D’s in Music Composition from Stony Brook University.

Ensemble Ipse was formed with a desire to build upon collaborations that have been developing over the last several years between its members.  Ipse's mission is to find common threads in works whose stylistic profiles appear, on the surface, as divergent. The group presents recent music that transcends aesthetic categorization and strives to create a forum for composers on the edges of the mainstream of contemporary music. To this end, Ensemble Ipse commissions and performs pieces that fall outside the practical confines of traditional concert resources, including works of long duration, multidisciplinary projects, collaboratively composed pieces, and pieces with unusual or non-standard instrumentation
