    LNG | Boundary Bay

A play and TV series exploring the lives surrounding oil and gas development on tribal land.

A Development Campaign for Boundary Bay | LNG

The development campaign for Boundary Bay and LNG — a play and TV miniseries exploring the lives surrounding oil and gas development on tribal land in the Pacific Northwest.

     North Hollywood, CA
This is an urgent time. We need to work beyond the fear of risk-averse producers and tell important contemporary indigenous stories, now. We can’t wait.

    BOUNDARY BAY | LNG
Boundary Bay, a limited series for cable television, and LNG, a full-length stageplay, are linked through their creation as part of Testify: Indigenous, a project of the Canadian based Indigenous Laws + the Arts Collective.

The initial draft of the pilot was presented as a stage reading in Vancouver B.C. (October 2016) and Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, B.C. (November 2016).  LNG was adapted for stage from the pilot. It enjoyed a first draft workshop at University of California, San Diego, organized by professor Julie Burelle and her indigenous theatre classes in March 2017.

    WHY INDIGENOUS FOCUS
As a member of the Squamish Nation (unceded territory adjacent to and including parts of Vancouver B.C.) much of my writing comes from a desire to create rich, compelling, and, at times, hilarious stories focused on Indigenous people who are often viewed as a relic—an object, a mascot, a costume, and an entity of the past. A people whose customs, language, and dress are appropriated for profits, generating billions in revenue for already rich people, and not towards the folks whose images and customs are stolen or violated. A people insulted en masse at sporting events, depicted savagely with chants like the “tomahawk chop.”

American mainstream theatre, film, and television have not helped the situation, long relegating Indigenous people to stereotypical portrayals. Nuanced contemporary stories with broad appeal are long overdue. Accessibility, honesty, complication, and universality; these are the ingredients I hope to employ. The trick is to write stories that we can all empathize with—stories that resonate on a personal level rather than disengage didactically—diving into worlds where right and wrong rarely exist.

My work, then, is storytelling; to share with the general public stories about contemporary Native Americans as I have witnessed and experienced. Not the ones of the past in feathers and fighting against settlers. But of everyday people, who work jobs, worry about their kids, and try to live happy productive lives. In a country that has far too long ignored, fetishized, or marginalized Native people, more work like LNG and Boundary Bay will help connect us to one another, and give us a broader sense of our rich collective experience.

    PART ONE: LABS + RESIDENCIES
I have been accepted into a screenwriting lab to begin in September 2017 (which is still in the pre-announcement phase so remains confidential). Here, industry connections will be fostered leading to paths of development and eventual production.

In October 2017, Testify will present LNG as a staged reading — I will direct and produce the reading — at University of Windsor & York University (Toronto) from October 12-17, 2017. This reading along with the first draft workshop will set the paths forward for the full-length stageplay rewrite. (Fees mainly covered, I hope to contribute $600-800 from my fundraising to help Testify cover actor honoraria.)

Bilpin International Ground for Creative Initiatives (BigCi) in Bilpin, Australia, November 8 – December 19, 2017, will be a big leap forward for rewriting and revising Boundary Bay. On December 17, I will produce a staged performance with local community artists and actors in the Blue Mountains, and run a talkback to solicit for feedback, resulting in final plans for written drafts.

Sointula Art Shed; Sointula, B.C., Canada, January 2018 will focus more on LNG the play; Sointula offers potential connections with local theatre and touch points with local indigenous community to help research, workshop, creatively explore, and nail down the play's final draft.

February, Rud-AIR, in Laxarby, Sweden. The final revisions for the works from the BigCi & Sointula residencies and feedback. The play and television series will be finalized for theatrical & television producer submissions.

    PART TWO: PRESENTING THE WORKS
As the residencies are happening, I will be actively submitting the projects to producers, theatres, and festival competitions. I will also be organizing stage presentations of the final works in Vancouver (LNG) and Los Angeles (Boundary Bay). This final phase is very tentative, it will depend on the relationships and networking success from the previous few months. So the presentations (or funding of such) may not be necessary if a producing partner has been secured by March 2018. But the odds of that are small, and so, the goal is to invite potential theatre or film-producing partner for the works to these staged presentations. And so, these funds will be used to pay for performance space, actors, transportation, directors, and marketing for the staged presentation events.

    ABOUT JUSTIN NEAL
I am an indigenous-focused playwright and screenwriter with a unique perspective.
Since sidelining a marketing career to return school and earn a Joint MFA degree in Creative Writing & Theatre from the UBC in Vancouver in 2015, I have since settled in Los Angeles. My screenplay, The Skins Game, has been selected as an official screenplay for four international film festivals (Oaxaca, Beverly Hills, Evolution/Mallorca, and Columbia Gorge), is a finalist in the 2017 WeScreenplay Diverse Voices competition and a quarterfinalist in three screenwriting competitions (currently in consideration in over ten festivals and competitions). My play So Damn Proud has received two successful workshops (at Native Voices at the Autry and Northwest Playwrights Alliance) and is under production consideration now. I have forged fledging relationships with writers and producers in Hollywood resulting in ghostwriting projects and creative contributions.
