Great news! Our companion campaign on Indiegogo has surpassed its 20k goal and is still receiving donations! We have 13 hours to raise the remaining combined total we need through both sites. We determined to get there. If you have a moment please take the time to spread the word. A short, clear link to share for this campaign is: www.microscopegallery.com/fa The Indiegogo campaign, which offers artist perks instead of tax donations is here: www.igg.me/at/microscopemoves
Much gratitude for you support so far for a new, exciting chapter!
Elle & Andrea
Microscope must unexpectedly move from its long-time space in Bushwick, Brooklyn by the end of April. We are seeking your help to create a new home that will allow us to continue and expand our programming, especially our weekly Event Series of time-based arts, which we have been preparing to resume in-person — after more than a year online — as soon as it is safely possible.
Your support will help us transform the new space we have found near the High Line in Manhattan to house our now 10 1/2 year-long Event Series that includes screenings of all formats (film, analog & digital video, etc.) music and experimental sound nights, performance art, expanded cinema, poetry, artist talks and more.
Although this has been an extremely difficult decision to move from our current space and neighborhood, we are excited about this new chapter for Microscope and hope that you will contribute to make this transition possible!
If a tax-donation isnot a priority for you, please consider visiting our companion campaign where we offer additional perks including limited edition art, music, books and more by trend-breaking artists: HERE
The total amount we must raise through both campaigns is $30,000.
Microscope Gallery was founded in September of 2010 by artists and curators Andrea Monti and Elle Burchill in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn, NY as an inclusive space dedicated to the time-based arts, presenting regular exhibitions as well as a weekly series of events featuring emerging to often overlooked trailblazing artists.
The main motivations for starting Microscope was to address a general lack of time-based works in art galleries as well as what we considered — and still do — as an unnecessary divide in the conversations and appreciation of works exhibited in the daylight setting of the gallery as opposed to those typically presented in the dark one of the screening/sound/performance venue.
Through both exhibitions and events, Microscope offers new and emerging artists the opportunity for larger bodies of their works to be seen, and for rediscoveries of overlooked works by more established artists. Additionally, Microscope is committed to increasing the inclusivity and diversity of its Series through, among others, a new group of core curators programming events on a regular basis, as well as collaborations with other organizations.
To date, we have presented more than 85 art exhibitions and nearly 600 events featuring works in moving image, digital, sound, performance, and more. Mediums include celluloid film, analog and digital video, stereoscopic 3D, 3D animation; live multi-screen and mixed media performances such as expanded cinema, A/V, 8-bit and VHS mixing; acoustic, noise, spoken word, experimental, and electronic sound; durational and other performance art, among many others.
We are excited to resume events onsite in our new space as soon as it is safe, and to continue to offer the chance to virtually attend the events online for anyone who is unable to be physically present.
Microscope always welcomes unsolicited submissions of works for consideration in future event and exhibition programming, and reviews them periodically. “Open Call” opportunities each year are also offered.
Microscope Gallery has been featured in many publications in the US and internationally including in Art in America, Artforum, Art Review, BOMB, BreakThruRadio, The Brooklyn Rail, Bushwick Daily, Cinespect, Emergency Index of Performance, Conde Nast Traveler, Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, La Furia Umana, Le Monde, Millennium Film Journal, New York Magazine, Screen Slate, Studio International, The Los Angeles Times, The London Times, The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Wall Street Journal, TIME Magazine, TimeOut NY, Underground Film Journal, Vice, Visionary Film, WYNC, and many others.
Why We Need Your Support Now
We have suddenly found ourselves in urgent need of a new home. In the last few weeks, circumstances in our building have made it impossible for us to continue our operations in our current space. As the oldest gallery currently operating in Bushwick for eleven years, we are finding the decision to leave our beloved neighborhood to be an extremely difficult one.
To our surprise, we have quickly managed to find a new space near the High Line in Manhattan that with your help, will allow us to continue and expand our programming. A new location and new home for time-based artists that we hope we will be able to build with your support.
This includes our Event Series, which requires very specific conditions relating to ceiling height, wall surface space, projection distances, acoustics, equipment storage, and so forth.
Although it may seem optimistic to embark in a move to a new space and to think of the possibility of in-person events during a still ongoing pandemic, it is clear that Microscope cannot exist without a physical place. In the not-too-distant future we will finally be able to reunite again IRL! Also, as we wait for that day, our exhibitions will continue to be on view by appointment only as they have been for the past several months.
Between now and our planned opening in late April, there is a lot of work to be done!
By contributing to our Campaign you will help us cover the necessary costs of building and soundproofing walls, electrical and lighting upgrades, as well as upgrades and replacements to our A/V equipment including a new 4k projector and a new projection screen, among others.
Looking Ahead
Microscope will remain dedicated to artists working with the time-based arts in all their forms and will be guided by the principles of inclusion, equity, and diversity, not only for the artists presented but also for the expanded circle of curators that will be involved on a more regular basis.
Although a lot of work lies ahead before we are able to resume operations and turn the lights off on our first event in a safer world, we are excited about this new chapter for Microscope!
