Silver Lining Project: Behold the Power of Women!

    Presented at Sonorous Road Theatre

    “I’m not done yet.”

Gloria Bernhardt, a retiree living at the Silver Retirement Home, is determined to survive the storm; she is convinced that she and her friends, four also-retired women, have been forgotten, written off as not worth saving from rising flood waters.

This is an all too familiar state of affairs for women of a certain age in the theater community – too few roles available, too few plays that explore the challenges and joys in their lives, and in general, not nearly enough women of ANY age involved in the world of the stage.  As one cast member relates: “Women over 50 are forgotten in many parts of society ... look at TV.  Look at Movies.  Look at reporters and anchors in the news.  Women over 50 are a growing demographic in society ... more educated than in the past with many talents and skills.  There is still much work to be done.”

The Silver Lining Project for the Sonorous Road Theatre and Film Studio is designed to provide access to relatable theater experiences for a demographic not often encouraged or welcomed in the theater community.  We are encouraging seniors to come see the play and enjoy entertainment designed to address their experiences and concerns. This fund-raising project will subsidize these efforts to provide incentives for seniors to come enjoy this US premiere of a British comedy by Sandi Toksvig.

Ms. Toksvig, in addressing why she wrote Silver Lining, says “I have something to say about how we treat old women in particular; we look at them and forget they had wonderful, full lives.”   We envision younger folks in our audiences remembering their elders, family members and friends they may have forgotten, being in touch, perhaps reconnecting and exploring together those wonderful, full lives. What a gift!

The play is being directed by Pam McClure, produced by Judy McCord, and opens on September 22, 2017 at Sonorous Road, 3801 Hillsborough St., Raleigh NC.  Tickets for general admission are $18; tickets for students, seniors and military are $14. Reduced price tickets are available to groups of ten or more seniors.
