Speak Up, Rise Up

Speak Up, Rise Up is a storytelling festival amplifying the voices of marginalized communities

    Speak Up, Rise Up 2018

Speak Up, Rise Up is a storytelling festival that aims to amplify the voices of communities and people we don’t get to hear from. Our 2018 Festival will be nearly twice as big as last years!

    This is a Fiscally-Sponsored Project

Speak Up, Rise Up is a storytelling festival that aims to amplify the voices of communities and people we don’t get to hear from.  Through live, personal storytelling, we combine both traditional and non-traditional storytellers on the big stage for curated events that share personal experiences. At our first festival, over 100 people took the stage throughout the week.  The shows highlighted diversity in subject matter - immigration stories, stories of LGBTQ rights, stories of incarcerated people; and diversity of performers – the festival featured a majority of female performers and majority people of color.

This year will feature nearly twice as many performances, being held at the Tank NYC's new space.  There will be over 40 shows throughout the week, including Aparna Nancherla, Ophira Eisenberg, Josh Johnson, WNYC's Nancy Podcast, Shalewa Sharpe, Negin Farsad, Leah Bonneman, Sydnee Washington, Bobby Hankinson, and many more.  Our community partners will feature The NYC Veteran's Alliance, Center for Popular Democracy, No One Left Behind, and Women of Color for Progress.

Women of Color for Progress (WCP) is a multi-strategy political organization founded by women of color for women of color. Through a racial equity and intersectional lens, WCP empowers women of color to excel, lead, represent and be heard. WCP aims to create an inclusive and transparent political system that focuses on progressive human rights legislation. Ultimately, we hope to not only elect women of color into public office, but also create a pipeline of women of color political leaders.

The mission of No One Left Behind is to help Afghan and Iraqi combat interpreters with Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) resettle safely in the United States. We bridge the gap that exists between current State Department and NGO refugee relief programs, and provide assistance with housing, employment and cultural adaptation. We treat our clients as the heroic veterans they are - to date we've helped resettle over 5,220 people.

The Center for Popular Democracy works to create equity, opportunity and a dynamic democracy in partnership with high-impact base-building organizations, organizing alliances, and progressive unions. CPD strengthens our collective capacity to envision and win an innovative pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda.

Started in January of 2015, NYC Veterans Alliance is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that improves the lives of veterans and their families in the NYC metropolitan area and empowers military veterans to become politically active through four engaging programs – Policy & Legislative Advocacy, Community Information, Get Ready to Run, and Civic Leadership. With the mission to advocate legislative action for all military veterans and their families while offering political engagement opportunities, NYC Veterans Alliance serves NYC’s 220,000+ veterans and 250,000+ dependent family members. For more information, please visit www.nycveteransalliance.org.

We are seeking funds to cover the costs of our theatrical crew and basic overhead.  The overall cost of the festival is just over $10,000.  This includes paying the artists, paying the theatrical crew, paying the theater, and covering promotional costs.  Our costs will be covered mostly by ticket sales and this campaign.
