Unsupervised is a member-organized large ensemble connecting musicians and audiences through shared experiences of music. With a horizontal structure rooted in collaboration, the unconducted ensemble builds a communal ethos through shared artistic and administrative leadership. Through this ethos, the group creates music that is alive for each other and for audiences.

Unsupervised will present its first public performance in May 2018 as the culmination of a months long process of development representing the core ideal of Unsupervised: orchestral performances invigorated by the relationships between the musicians and their collaboration in giving life to musical experience. Long before rehearsals begin for the May performance, the musicians will work together to build the ensemble, choose repertoire, and develop a musical vision. Every musician will also be involved with the execution of the project, helping to fundraise, promote, and organize the performance. Along the way, we will work to develop a tight community, all of us spending time getting to know each other as individuals through social gatherings and as musicians through impromptu chamber ensembles.

This project means very little if it is not shared with the wider Chicago community and, hopefully, beyond, so an important element will be to document the process. We will produce videos, photos, and interviews that will illuminate the ways we build community within the group and how we make musical and organizational decisions in a democratic, collaborative way. By sharing this media on Facebook and Instagram and at the concert in May, we hope to comprehensively demonstrate what we think an orchestra can and should be. We believe this process will result in a performance that is vibrant and deeply meaningful for musicians and audience.

Your donation directly supports our first concert in May, funding venue rental, music liscensing, and related production expenses. Just $300 sponsors a musician for the performance as well.
