The Muse Project began as a question posed by actor Jocelyn Kuritsky: Why do female actors still struggle to feel fulfilled by the roles they play? A search for the answer to this question and an investigation of its genesis has, through a series of successes, failures, and iterations, led to the development of a project devoted to providing female actors with the resources and stimulation to create theatrical art out of their deepest impulses and unfulfilled artistic desires.
The Muse Project is an initiative that moves female actors to the center by charging them to identify and generate the roles they want to play. The traditional theater model asks female actors to fit themselves into roles overwhelmingly written by men and in service of male characters. Women-centric stories, when produced, are relegated to the second stage theaters, lower budget productions, and fringe theater scenes. The Muse Project, under the leadership of actor/activist Jocelyn Kuritsky, seeks to change the model and put the power into the hands of female actors and gives them the agency to tell their own stories and/or stories that excite them. HISTORY HAS NOT BEEN ON WOMEN’S SIDE, BUT THAT WILL CHANGE.
