A Sound Called Home: The Choir Rehearsal is an original gospel dramedy set inside New Hope Church, where an ordinary choir rehearsal becomes a place of laughter, grief, confrontation, and healing.
The story follows Yolanda, a grieving mother searching for enough faith to sing again; Darius, a teenager carrying survivor’s guilt after the death of his best friend; Reggie, a choir director whose ministry has left him emotionally exhausted; and Sister Mae, a longtime church member who must finally confront a painful truth that New Hope buried for decades.
Through gospel music, humor, testimony, and difficult conversations, the production asks an important question: Can a place that caused pain become a home again by telling the truth about what happened?
Our Goal
A choir becomes a home when every voice is heard, every silence is noticed, and there is always room for one more chair. We are raising $30,000 to move A Sound Called Home from a completed script into a fully realized theatrical production.
Campaign funds will help support:
Compensation for actors, vocalists, musicians, designers, and production personnel
Original music, vocal arrangements, and music development
Rehearsal-space and performance-venue expenses
Sound, lighting, staging, and technical equipment
Costumes, choir robes, props, and scenic materials
Marketing, printing, photography, and promotional video
Insurance, administrative, accessibility, and front-of-house expenses
Community access tickets for audiences who might not otherwise be able to attend
Our planned use of the $30,000 campaign goal is:
$8,000: Cast, musician, and creative-team compensation
$5,000: Original music, arrangements, and rehearsals
$6,000: Venue, sound, lighting, and technical production
$4,000: Scenery, costumes, choir robes, and props
$3,000: Marketing, printing, photography, and video
$2,000: Insurance, administration, accessibility, and audience services
$2,000: Community tickets and additional production needs
These allocations may shift as production needs are finalized, but all campaign funds will directly support the development and presentation of A Sound Called Home.
About the Creator
A Sound Called Home was written and created by Washington, DC area playwright and producer L-Tyree.
Drawing from experience in events, live production, theater, and community centered storytelling, L-Tyree creates work rooted in Black life, faith, family, humor, and the complicated places people search for belonging. His goal is to create theatrical experiences that entertain audiences while opening space for honest conversations that continue after the final curtain.
Why This Story Matters
Many people know what it feels like to lose their voice inside a place where they once felt at home. This production does not offer easy answers or pretend that grief disappears after the right song. Instead, it explores what becomes possible when people stop hiding pain behind performance, listen to the voices they have ignored, and make room for one another without demanding that everyone be healed first.
Your contribution will help employ local artists, complete the show’s original music, build the production, and make this story accessible to the community it was created to serve.
Whether you contribute $25, $250, $2,500, or simply share the campaign, you become part of the sound.
One voice may begin the song but it takes a community to bring it home!
