AnomalousCo theatre collective - predominantly women-led, nearly-all-immigrant, entirely-feminist - is raising funds to cover the production costs for the next iteration of (beyond) Doomsday Scrolling - our Epic Theatre Cabaret about Women, War, Displacement, and Resistance, playing for two weeks in February 2023 at Here Arts Center!
(beyond) Doomsday Scrollingis an original work of theatre, music, and personal testimony. Set in an imagined theatre sheltering women fleeing from wars across time and across the globe, this dramatic cabaret connects the invasion of Ukraine with the larger landscape of systemic aggression around the world – and centers women in the story of war.
Presenting freshly devised material in each iteration, this performance has three social justice aims: to bear witness, to raise humanitarian aid, and to stand in solidarity with refugees, and against the divisions being sown between peoples.
(beyond) Doomsday Scrolling is produced, created, and performed almost entirely by immigrant women. The multi-generational creative team - actors, dramaturgs, musicians, writers, and designers - hail from Cuba, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Poland, Iceland, Italy, Scotland, Puerto Rico, China, Israel, and the US.
Amplifying the voices of women as social actors in wartime, our multilingual show is performed by 12 women and 1 man - flipping the script on a long history of male-centric war stories.Featuring a live ensemble (vocals, bandura, french horn, violin, accordion, mandolin, and keyboard) headed by Ukrainian musician Lesya Verba, with songs ranging freely over cultures, eras, and genres, the piece conveys experiences of displacement and resistance through drama, satire, music, living newspaper, personal testimony, and texts drawn from the rich tradition of women’s war writings.
From the theatrical cabarets of the Jewish Ghettos to the theatre-shelters of Ukraine in 2022, theatres around the world have played a critical role wartime - as shelters, as sites of opposition, and as spaces in which to construct sense from nightmare. Excavating that legacy, (beyond) Doomsday Scrolling traces a single day in the life of 12 women from different countries, wars, and eras, sheltering in a theatre: a microcosm of intercultural conflict, friendship, violence, and resilience. The play culminates with an action of resistance quoting the global legacy of feminist arts activism.
The current iteration of the show will run for two weeks in February 2023 at the HERE Arts Center in New York City.
This production was developed and made possible with the support of the Center at West Park, which hosted the first two iterations of the show. Continued development has been supported by generous rehearsal residencies provided by The Center at West Park, Target Margin Theatre, and (twice) Chashama, as well as a donation of additional rehearsal space from LEIMAY.
