Apocalyptic Artists is an ensemble of multidisciplinary theatre makers committed to shaping the future of classical theatre, making it accessible for all.
We produce new and innovative adaptations, honor artists with diverse identities and experiences, and provide inspirational programming for young people.
Our Story
Apocalyptic Artists was born out of a simple desire to serve the students in our community who were losing access to arts programming during the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic. What began as online workshops paired with Zoom performances of Macbeth has grown beyond what we could have anticipated. Since 2020, we have facilitated close to 400 in-school workshops for more than 3000 students. We have also screened our own filmed adaptations of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Julius Caesar throughout middle and high school classrooms in New York City. Our filmed adaptation of As You Like It wrapped principal photography in September of this year, and will be screened in schools in Fall 2024.
After several years of creating filmed adaptations of Shakespeare plays, we are very excited to produce our first LIVE performance of a Shakespeare play in Spring 2024.
Apocalyptic Artists Ensemble and Classical Theater of Harlem’s production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will tour New York City Middle and High Schools, providing students with a unique theatrical experience. Employing minimal design and live musical elements, a company of actors will transform familiar school spaces - cafeterias, auditoriums - into Verona.
In advance of all performances, Apocalyptic Artists Ensemble will provide residencies to schools consisting of 5-7 sequential workshops taught by artists associated with the production. Residencies will employ curriculum guided by the Social Justice Standards put forth by the Southern Poverty Law Center that engages students in the language and themes of the play through embodied textwork, culminating in an in-class showcase of student performances from the play.
The Breakdown
Our co-production is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts’ Shakespeare in American Communities grant. In order to produce a quality show and reach as many schools as possible, we are raising an additional $25,000 to bring this tour to life.
Funds raised through this campaign will be used for:
Paying our Designers, Director, Fight Director and Intimacy Coordinator
Paying our Teaching Artists, who do incredible work in NYC classrooms
Space Rental for rehearsals, and performance spaces for schools that do not have the space to host a performance
Production expenses, such as materials for costumes and set design
Apocalyptic Artists and the Classical Theatre of Harlem are proud to be the recipients of the Shakespeare in American Communities Grant awarded annually by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
Celebrating its 20th year in 2023, Shakespeare in American Communities is a theater program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The program supports high-quality productions and educational activities exploring the work of William Shakespeare in middle schools, high schools, and juvenile facilities throughout the United States.
