Bat Witch Ghost is a new Bay Area arts organization building on the tradition of the American haunted house to unite artists, neighbors, and local businesses in collaborative creation and community connection. Our mission is simple: provide paid opportunities for artists while creating handcrafted immersive experiences that bring people together.
Our Story
In 2024, artist Aaron Wojack proposed reviving a tradition he had successfully created in Minneapolis in 2006, where a haunted house became a sustained funding source for The Soap Factory gallery. The Bay Area arts community responded enthusiastically. By September, a dedicated team began transforming the service alley and garage of Aaron and Anna's Mission District apartment building.
With minimal promotion—hand-distributed flyers and word of mouth—The Corridor of Horror ran for three nights before Halloween. Over 200 visitors experienced our "Forest Witch Lab," including families from nearby Marshall Elementary. The response was overwhelmingly positive, earning praise from KQED Arts Writer Sarah Hotchkiss as "My favorite art experience of the year, hands down."
2025 Vision
Building on this success, we're partnering with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for a professional production featuring:
- 10+ nights of performances with matinee shows for families
- Enhanced production values while maintaining handcrafted artistry
- Integrated community space for gathering and connection
- "Adult smart, kid safe" themes that avoid typical gore and violence
