Do you remember the television show "Bewitched" — the classic story of a powerful witch risking everything to fall in love with a mortal man?

Did you know there was a play that inspired the show, titled "Bell, Book and Candle"? 

This 1950s romantic comedy has now been reimagined with an all-Black cast set in 1950s Durham, North Carolina. Set in the historic Hayti neighborhood, written by James E. Stewart, this new interpretation reshapes the story into a celebration of Black history, spirituality, and ancestry.

In March of 2026, the project came to life through a staged reading at the Durham Arts Council, supported in part by a grant from the Durham Arts Council. Now, our team is preparing to bring the full production to the Hayti Heritage Center in late October 2026 — and we need your help to raise the curtain.

Bell, Book & Candle is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a nonprofit arts service organization. Fractured Atlas will receive contributions for the charitable purposes of Bell, Book & Candle, provide oversight to ensure that funds are used in accordance with applicable requirements, and provide reports as required.
