Bold and Revolutionary Space with Jordan E. Cooper

In February of 2017, we featured Jordan E. Cooper's full-length play, "Ain't No 'Mo"

It was the 1st reading of the full version of this play that went on to The Public Theatre for a short run during the Spring of 2018 and will have a full run during the Spring of 2019.

We are so proud of Jordan and so proud to have been part of his development journey.

Every dollar counts as we campaign to raise $10K in honor of our 10th anniversary.

We appreciate Jordan sharing his story about us with you and look forward to more highlights from him as we go along!

The 1st Reading of "School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play" - Jocelyn Bioh

On January 11, 2016, Jocelyn Bioh was a FEATURE playwright with the 1st draft of her new play, "School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play"

Since 2008, Blackboard has been devoted to Black Playwrights across the African Diaspora.  It is vital to our mission to give Black Playwrights the opportunities they so deserve.

More specifically, that means a reading with a 20-minute talkback and a chance for the writer to invite an audience into a beautiful space to hear their work.

Development is a journey and we are honored to be part of Jocelyn's journey with this play.  It has been a fruitful one for her and the cast from the 2017 the MCC production.

In honor of our 10th Anniversary, we are raising $10K.  10 years is a long time to exist in New York.  We have seen many playwrights over the years and are excited by their many achievements.

Support us so that we can continue to do the work of supporting writers like Jocelyn telling stories we have not heard and that we need to hear.

Her First NYC Production: Support Video from Toccarra Cash

Toccarra Cash has been part of Blackboard Reading Series since 2009.

In her support video, Toccarra shares a little bit of her journey with us from the very beginning. (Don't miss the flash back photos from 2009!)

Her first New York city production was Bonfire Night that was produced by the cell in association with Blackboard in May of 2009.  It was exciting.  It was also the only production we've done to date.

The reason being: we wanted to focus on development.  It's been our dream to help playwrights at the beginning of their journey - our strength is in the feature reading and the community nights that make up so much of our organization.

Enjoy!

Also: We'd love for you to please share this campaign with others so we can reach our goal of $10,000 by the end of July!

Planting Seeds and Bearing Fruit with LaChrisha Brown

LaChrisha Brown has been coming to Blackboard Reading Series since the very beginning.  In 2017, she was approached to be part of the web-series #TeacherProblems by Tarana Peaches and Produced by former Co-Curator Yvonne Almeria Campbell.

LaChrisha Brown has also been playing PEDDI in #shoppinforniggas by Blackboard Founder Garlia Cornelia since the play was created during their time at  The New School for Drama where they both earned the MFA (LaChrisha - Acting / Garlia - Playwrighting).

Thank You LaChrisha for this beautiful message of support and for your community over the years.

We are finally 10!!!! And to celebrate, our goal is to raise $10,000 dollars! Since 2008, Blackboard has been incubated by the cell and devoted to Black Playwrights throughout the African Diaspora. We’ve produced 1 play but have found our strength in our monthly reading series and hope to strengthen past year 10 with workshop readings and productions with a focus on development.  From our community nights to monthly features, we are here to serve Black Playwrights.  Let’s continue and thrive in our 10th year and beyond, not just survive.

Consistency has been our strength.  10 years in one location in New York City could not have happened without with generosity of the cell.  Their incubation has been a unique gift that we know contributed to our longevity.  In recent years, we have worked towards our own goals of a podcast to highlight the work of former features and other Black artists within our community.  We have also been part of the C-MORE festival with the cell.  Which has been an opportunity for collaboration with other sister organizations and found us working closely with our friends at Liberation Theatre Company this year.

So how do we get to $10,000???

Well...that’s just one thousand people donating $10 this June.
($10 dollars, is the suggested donation for admittance. If 10 is too much donate 5 and ask a friend to donate too!)

We are excited for our 10th year and thank you for your continued devotion and belief in the work we have done and will continue to do that facilitates the conversation Black Playwrights have through their work of the diverse stories within the Black Community.
