Hello from the Brooklyn College playwriting cohort (a.k.a. Alina, Diana, Marissa, Max, and Nic)!
After a transformative two years under the tutelage of artist-extraordinaires Haruna Lee, Dennis A. Allen II, and Elana Greenfield, the Brooklyn College playwriting cohort will present the 2023 Weasel Festival, a showcase for recent graduates for the last 15-odd years.
This year’s Weasel Festival (whose full title is Bring a Weasel and A Pint of Your Own Blood) will play in Brooklyn in June 2023 for two nights of wild newpLaYs. Prompted by our recent alumni playwrights, our festival will explore the theme of legacy.
This year, we’re partnering with The Brick Theater, Williamsburg’s primary incubator of innovative theater and performing arts. The decision to self-produce this festival reflects our ethos. Brooklyn College playwrights have changed the American theatre with their rigorous formal invention. The work of our alumni has been seen on and off Broadway, has been honored with the Pulitzer Prize, and is being developed by production companies like A24. This revolutionary work does not spring fully formed, though. It’s forged in the independent performance community, often without a safety net, which is why we’re crowdfunding!
To get serious for a second (the typist takes a knee):
TYPIST: The scribes of this here Weasel are not only inimitable voices in the New York City theatre community. And not only do they carry the flame of possibility-warping drama passed down from on highe by the likes of Satter, Baker, Lee(s) + co, but they are also imbued with those qualities of hutzpah and go-get-em that have become a hallmark of BC Bulldog Playwrights for the past one score and some odd years.
Translation: we get after it! This program is chock-full of ace scribblers who double as producers. We’re scrappy, resourceful, and have been stockpiling elbow grease since the heyday of the pandemic.
To get serious for a second (the accountant can’t take a knee due to his sciatica, so he squats):
ACCOUNTANT: Over 60% of our budget is going toward paying people. Since Weasel is an independent production, we think none of our collaborators should go without compensation. The other 40% is gaff tape, tho.
Psych! It’s for overhead, production, insurance, and the costs to archive our work for future opportunities, blah, blah, blah… You get it!
Please consider supporting our festival with a tax-deductible donation! We can’t wait to serve you what we’ve been cooking up at ol’ Playwright U.
