Brooklyn Studios for Dance (BkSD) is facing two emergencies:
- Our landlord, Cadman Memorial Congregational Church, is attempting to evict us by declaring our Occupancy Agreement is invalid.
- The Church has been providing limited or no heat and electricity since mid-November preventing us from operating.
We are raising $15,000 in Emergency Funds to help us cover:- Legal Expenses- $11000
- Replacement Venue Rentals Costs - $2000
- Lost Income - $2000
How BkSD startedIn April of 2015 BkSD Partnered with Cadman Memorial Congregational Church to renovate and repair their 2nd floor gymnasium and establish a community dance studio.
Collaborating with the ChurchOur first season culminated with a Collaborative Holiday Event organized by BkSD and the Church which included performances, a candlelight service, a shared meal and a tree lighting. In January 2016 we signed a
5-year Occupancy Agreement with Church Board of Trustees.
Since then the Church Leadership has gone through a transition. They no longer want BkSD to remain at Cadman Church and have challenged the legitimacy of our original agreement. In the past year and a half we have dealt with sporadic lock-outs, eviction threats, and loss of heat. Our attempts to mediate with the Church have not succeeded and they are pursuing eviction of BkSD in Local Civil Court.
Information on Court Hearings will be in the UPDATES section of the this Fundraiser.Among those who support BkSD's efforts to remain at Cadman Memorial Church are former board members
