Caesura Unit is a gallery in Easthampton Mass., founded in 2025, and as we move into our second year of programming, due to a very recent and unforeseen change in our funding, we are faced with a need to ask for help to preserve this space where meaning can continue to be cultivated, held, and shared.
Caesura Unit was born in the belief that it’s possible to live in a small community and generate a vibrant, rigorous, meticulous, open, and inspiring dialogue linking international cities to the outer reaches of smaller regions, like ours. Caesura Unit is truly independent, and in resistance to an increasingly prescribed, insistent, voluminous, and undermining culture. In this spirit Caesura Unit endeavors to thread histories, materials, thought, experiences, and meaning together.
Our lease renews at the end of October and we now find ourselves dearly asking for your help for this to continue. We are looking to raise $15,000 by the end of November. This amount will cover a new rental deposit, insurance, a year of rent, and leave a small seed fund towards exhibitions and events that are in development to be realized in 2026.
Caesura Unit is grounded in the knowledge that every day maintenance is needed to hold the space necessary for quieter meanings to register in our community. In one short year, it has become a place where people can connect through the coalescence of artworks, sound, video, and performance, that are at once fleeting, inquisitive, disruptive, beautiful, and true.
Since moving from Manchester (England) to Western Mass., it took me twenty years to build a framework that could support the existence of this gallery. Our mission is value driven and born out of a commitment to, and care for, where we live. Created to celebrate and develop a delicate and strong fabric, comprising correspondents, collaborators, co-conspiritors, and dear friends, between Berlin, Copenhagen, Easthampton, Greenfield, Holyoke, London, Manchester, New York, Paris, Todmorden, Tokyo, and Zurich.
Events in the gallery’s founding year have encompassed a group exhibition and a related series of events, with artist talks, two commissioned essays, a commissioned poem and premiere reading event, two video artwork screenings, two listening events premiering two artist sound works, two improvised sound and music performances, the commission and premiere performances of three short-form plays with large format set installations and lighting design, with a zine-catalogue/programme published for each gallery event, while welcoming an array of international artists to the small historic mill town of Easthampton.
We ask that you consider the donation options and what you may be able to manage, in support of our continuing programming. Donations of $25 and up, come with perks, including publications, editions, and original artwork.
Your donation will cover a year of rent, a new rental deposit, insurance, and leave a small seed fund towards exhibitions and events that are in development to be realized in 2026.
