Inspired by true events, Trap Game is a new play that follows a professional hockey team on the verge of their first championship when a rookie player is assaulted by a trusted coach. The rest of the team must grapple with their masculine trauma to decide what matters more: the glory of victory, or their fellow teammates. Featuring real 16th-19th century sea shanties, and music by The Longest Johns, Trap Game runs for 4 performances only and should not be missed.
History
While this play is an original work of fiction, it is directly inspired by the sexual assault incident involving the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010. The Blackhawks were on the verge of winning their first Stanley Cup, when two players were sexually assaulted by a coach. When one of the players told another coach, the organization elected to do nothing in order to “avoid distractions.” The offending coach was not removed until after the team won the Cup. With his removal, he was allegedly given a letter of recommendation which he used to teach at a university and assault a minor. The Blackhawks organization kept this incident hidden for a decade until one of the victims came forward. His act of bravery threatened his hockey career, but it set in motion sweeping changes in the NHL, and has revealed multiple incidents involving sexual assault across the hockey world.
Trap Game sets out to examine these isolated masculine environments, and ask questions in order to discuss the generational male trauma that fosters this behavior, and spread awareness about male sexual assault.
