This was our first attempt to do a crowdfunding campaign, and the night before we launched, I remember panicking about what would happen if we didn't raise a single dollar. But mine - and everyone's - expectations were blown away. Though we didn't reach our goal, the amount of support shown to this campaign has truly touched us. We cannot do what we do without supporters like you. Because of your support, we have fully funded our commission with Hilary Purrington! I can't overemphasize how amazing this is. We cannot wait to see and hear what Hilary writes, and I hope you're just as excited for the premiere as we are. What we're even more excited about is that we had 38 individual donations to our campaign, with an average donation of $66.50. To have that level of excitement for what we're doing means the world to us. We're working to make Catchfire a community for new music lovers, and we're so happy to see so many people joining in with us. It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks for us, and it's continuing as we move from fundraising and livestreaming back to live performances! If you haven't already seen, we're performing in Greensboro and Chapel Hill on May 21, 22, and 23. We hope you'll join us if you're in the area! Reigniting the Chamber Music Experience
Our group believes in creating a community for new classical music, one that welcomes conventional and unconventional listeners alike. We know that people are hungry for something new from their classical music, and we know that new fans can be found in the most unlikely spaces. When you’ve had a downtown bar full of people clap along to twenty minutes of experimental improv, you know that there are as many people who are as passionate about creating a sustainable chamber music ecosystem as we are.
We want to create a space for those people. We’re meeting people where they are and bringing the best new music directly to them. We’re giving them the opportunity to connect with other new music lovers. We want the concerts we present now to build a scene for new music in Greensboro that will last beyond us. Our next season is just a taste of the possibilities to come; we hope you’ll donate to support it.
The 411 on 2021 (and 2022!)
What can you expect in 2021-22? This year, we’re pushing ourselves to perform over 350 minutes of music across 7 programs and 18 performances. We’re bringing world class classical music to your favorite bars, bookstores, and galleries with all the polish you’d find at a concert hall. We’re turning your favorite spaces in GSO into great spaces for new music.
Headlining our 21-22 season is a commission by Hilary Purrington. Hilary has written for orchestra, voice, dance, and chamber groups and has had her works performed by Peabody Modern Orchestra, the American Modern Ensemble, Voices of Change, and the Chicago Harp Quartet. We’re thrilled to be working with her on a new work, especially since some of us had the privilege of performing her piece “Extraordinary Flora” during our graduate degrees at UNCG. We know you’ll love her piece, and we can’t wait for the premiere in January 2022.
This October, you can join us for City of Industry, a portrait concert of “one woman Hadron collider” Annie Gosfield, featuring industrial sounds and spaces. You can also hear works in September and November by inti figgis-vizueta, Christopher Mayo, Nicholas V. Hall, Allison Loggins-Hull, and Robert Honstein. In the Spring, you can hear music by Holly Harrison, Anna Clyne, and JacobTV. And at the end of our season, come experience i am a shadow...the true self in May, a choreographed performance featuring Eleanor Alberga’s sublime “Dancing with the Shadow.”

Now It's Time For A (Cost) Breakdown
Next season’s expenses range from space and percussion rentals, score purchases, artist fees, and promotion materials, but your donation today will specifically support Hilary’s commission. We’re hoping to raise $2,500 to help Hilary bring this piece to life.
In addition, your donation goes towards purchasing the necessary sound equipment to bring Carnegie Hall level acoustics to your favorite brewery or backyard. We’ve estimated that these purchases will cost $4,000, but our goal is to raise $2,500 to get started. Your support now helps us make the investments we need to present innovative and powerful performances in any venue for years to come.
