i am a shadow...the true self is an evening-length concert featuring a choreographed performance of Eleanor Alberga’s Dancing with the Shadow. The concert grapples with the concept of our shadow self, that version of ourselves that we repress and hide away from the world. Only through confronting that other self - only through accepting that other self - can we truly understand ourselves. Only through dancing with the shadow can we find enlightenment.

Presented by Greensboro-based chamber music ensemble Catchfire Collective, i am a shadow...the true self features new choreography by Chris Yon and Taryn Griggs for Eleanor Alberga’s Dancing with the Shadow. The concert also features performances of Philip Cashian’s Dark Inventions, David Lang’s cheating, lying, stealing, and Hilary Purrington’s tourmaline. 

Catchfire is honored to have the opportunity to partner with Chris, Taryn, and Creative Greensboro to create and present this show in Greensboro, for Greensboro. We will be in residency at the Stephen D. Hyers Theatre in the Greensboro Cultural Arts Center as part of Creative Greensboro’s “Residency at the Hyers” Program. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to create meaningful and innovative work for Greensboro’s arts and music lovers - but it can’t happen without your donation.

We’ve taken care of the venue - but we need your help to get the performers there. We’re raising funds to design the choreography for Dancing with the Shadow and to hire some incredible early career dancers from the Piedmont Triad. Your donation also helps us pay for venue staff to create spectacular sound and lighting design, instrument rentals for bigger and better percussion, and marketing materials to reach new audiences. 

We want to make this show as accessible as possible for as many people as possible while paying our artists what they deserve. Every dollar raised through this campaign helps offset project expenses, which in turn helps lower ticket costs.
