ATACAMA Exhibition Update - December 2025

Greetings!

Over the summer, we successfully ran an ATACAMA crowdfunding campaign and reached our goal at the end of August.

In September, I edited, reworked, and refined all images for the exhibition. I also built a 1/12-scale model of the exhibition space at the Houston Museum of Natural Science to better visualize it in 3D.

Reference prints of the master working files for the ATACAMA exhibition.

A 1/12-scale model of the exhibition space featuring a slightly tall Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

At the beginning of October, I sent the working files and reference prints to Blazing Editions in RI to begin creating proofs as dye-sublimation metal prints. Then we continued our work on the layout, design, and sequencing of the exhibition's photographs.

In November, I traveled to Blazing Editions in East Greenwich, RI, to refine the image colors and begin producing full-scale prints. Ten exhibition prints will be 48 inches tall, and 25 prints will be 30 inches tall. All will be framed in black, museum-quality wood.

At Blazing Editions, we align the dye-sublimation metal print proofs with my reference prints.

Now, we are finalizing exhibition graphics and design, wall text, and completing additional research as needed.

Once our museum deadlines are met, we will start creating and sending the acknowledgments and rewards for your generosity in bringing the ATACAMA exhibition to life.

A reminder - The exhibition will open at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on February 21 and run through August 16, 2026.

Thanks for your continued support!

All my best to you,

Jamey
I need your help to raise $65,000 by August 31 to create the premiere exhibition of ATACAMA to debut as a FotoFest Biennial 2026 Participating Space exhibition, part of Houston’s internationally renowned photography biennial.

Each time you unlock your smartphone, drive your car, or turn on a light, you tap into the remote landscapes of the Atacama Desert, where copper and lithium are extracted to power our modern lives.

I’m Jamey Stillings, an artist dedicated to exploring the intersection of art, the environment, and our evolving relationship with the planet. For fifteen years, I’ve been working on a multi-chapter project titled "Changing Perspectives: Renewable Energy and the Shifting Human Landscape," using aerial photography to reveal how human innovation and intervention shape the Earth.

ATACAMA: Renewable Energy and Mining in the High Desert of Chile is my most ambitious chapter to date. Between 2017 and 2022, I flew over the Atacama Desert to capture its paradox: vast solar and wind farms powering mines that extract minerals vital for renewable energy and consumer technology. Chile provides a third of the world’s copper and ranks second in lithium production; however, this advancement comes with complex environmental implications. While renewable energy reduces the carbon footprint of mining, the surging demand for these minerals, driven by our technology-dependent lifestyles, challenges us to reconsider the meaning of sustainability.

The ATACAMA Exhibition

I have a tremendous opportunity to create the premier exhibition of ATACAMA: Renewable Energy and Mining in the High Desert of Chile, a FotoFest Biennial 2026 Participating Space exhibition, part of Houston’s internationally renowned citywide photography biennial. If this fundraising campaign is successful, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has graciously offered to host the exhibit, which will feature large-format aerial photographs exploring renewable energy, mining, and our global reliance on copper and lithium.

I need your help to raise $65,000 by August 31 to cover the exhibition’s printing and production costs. Your contribution will help create a world-class experience that sparks conversation, inspires learning, and connects people to the urgent issues shaping our future. Your support will raise awareness about the vital connections between technology, resource extraction, climate change, and environmental stewardship.

Together, we can turn art into a catalyst for change. Please help me make this exhibition a reality. Every contribution, large or small, helps illuminate the urgent choices shaping our world. Thank you!
