Bio
Nathaniel Meek has been working professionally in theater, film, television and the education fields for two decades between Los Angeles and New York. Trained as an actor at the prestigious UCLA School of Theater Film and Television he quickly started producing plays by Neil LaBute and David Mamet, and eventually performed at the Geffen Playhouse in LA with Chris Pine in the west coast premiere of LaBute’s Fat Pig. He later joined the Los Angeles Theater Ensemble and Rogue Machine Theater companies before moving to New York City in 2019. His first one act play The Anniversary was performed by world class actors Dave Quay and Helen Cespedes at The Lightning Society in Bushwick, and he later produced, wrote and directed his first full length play The Boy at The Tank in Manhattan.
The New Play
His new play Chaya is based on his post-college relationship with an Orthodox Jewish woman and asks the question, “is love really able to supersede tradition, family and prejudice?” Set in Los Angeles in the mid 2000’s two young roommates, one Christian one Orthodox Jewish, fall in love despite their vastly different religious upbringings. They’re convinced that their love can beat the odds, but quickly find that family, tradition and culture prove to be nearly insurmountable hurdles. The play is a will they/won’t they with 1,000 years of custom and ritual behind it.
“When we’re young we see plays like Romeo And Juliet and tons of fairy tales about true love beating all odds. But what we aren’t told is that love for family, culture and a lot of other things we’re raised with, can sometimes be in direct conflict with our romantic relationships. We all have to decide if we’re willing to change the fundamentals of who we are for someone else, someone we truly love, and how that can shape our future, in ways we may not realize for years to come.”
The Campaign
Nathaniel raised $10,000 for his first production at The Tank and now he’s looking to double that budget to pay a bigger cast, a fantastic crew and world class designers a fair wage, all while putting on a full production that will wow audiences, and hopefully move off-Broadway and beyond.
Please join us in supporting this show from the beginning and help, through theater, to connect anyone that has ever felt the challenges of love when all the odds are stacked against them.
