We have met our production goal of $20,000! We now need your help getting us to $30,000 for post-production, festival submissions, and public screenings!
When a really good date in the present resembles a traumatic moment from the past, a dissociated Alex must find their way through their own wry psyche to get back into their elusive body, as long as a past version of themselves "Cool Alex" stays on their side...
Checking Out is both a short film and a proof of concept for a tv dramedy series about a non-binary personal trainer navigating their hot and cold relationship with their own body as they help others build strength and embodiment. The vibe is Shrinking meets Feel Good with a touch of surrealism. The series centers around their friend group at the inclusive, body positive gym "Our Gym", that they call home base, inspired by the queer & trans-owned gym Everybody Los Angeles. This story is one of hope for those living with complex-ptsd sharing the message that we are lovable just as we are, despite the challenges we may endure. We intend to hold screenings of the film for the LGBTQ+ community and mental health organizations to bring this first chapter of our series to those who need this message most.
We are proud to share that as of 5/20/24, the screenplay for Checking Out, written by Ames Miyako, is an official selection for Best Screenplay - Short Film in the Seattle Film Festival. With our award-winning team who has been recognized by the Producers Guild of America, and had their work selected for Academy Award and BAFTA qualifying festivals such as Sundance, Outfest and more, we are confident that this project be both beautifully crafted and socially impactful.
Checking Out was born from the need to see stories about non-binary & trans folks going through universal experiences. Our full humanity needs to be shown on screen, not just debates from talking heads or tragic headlines about the violence we face. Our stories matter.
Our $30,000 budget covers 2 shooting days, hiring our full creative team, actors, production & crew, post-production team, festival submissions, & screenings for LGBTQ & Mental Health orgs. By supporting this project, you are increasing awareness and representation for the LGBTQ+ community, and for those struggling with mental illnesses.
Why it will succeed Checking Out tells a story that we know well, that our friends know well, that our family and colleagues and acquaintances and nemesis know well. It's also a story that people who aren't a part of the LGBTQ+ community, and even those who oppose our very existence can relate to. This isn't a PSA about what it means to be one identity. It's an authentic story about an imperfect person trying their best to do and be what they feel is right.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for supporting this project. As tragic headlines continue to show us the extreme violence that trans folks face, rarely getting "justice", it is undeniable that our world needs more empathy and understanding of who we are. We need our joy to be seen and celebrated, our very human challenges related to, and our existence to be honored and respected.
Stories are the most powerful tool we have as human beings.
Thank you for helping us to share this one.
