The Project

Modulations is the newest work by COMPANY, premiering in Durham, NC on July 17-24, 2017. It's our most ambitious project yet: an hour-long dance that incorporates live dance, film, and sound. For Modulations, the 7 dancers of COMPANY are collaborating with artists Jess Dilday (music,) Heather Gordon (visual art,) Michelle Lotker (documentation,) Alex Maness (film,) Matt McClure, (music,) Del Ward (music,) and Lee Weisert (music.)

July 19 and 21 @ 8pm, Modulations will be live-streamed and projected in the public Bull Plaza at 21c Museum Hotel in downtown Durham, NC. Live music performances at the projection site by Del Ward. Free and open to the public.

July 23 and 24 @ 8pm, Modulations will be performed onstage in the Ballroom at 21c Museum Hotel in Durham, NC with original live sound scores each night by Jess Dilday (PlayPlay,) Matt McClure, and Lee Weisert. Tickets are available by donation online and at the door.

It's a really big one.

A multi-media extravaganza! Live streamed dance, film-making, and music performances, with large-scale projection... through these production elements, Modulations invites big shifts into the work to see how it manages. In flux, the work can remain a subject, instead of a fixed object.

Keeping the work off-balance is for the fun of it, and we think it serves to intensify the inherent nature of live performance. Interchanging elements of film, staging, and live music performances invites audiences to experience a live dance work at it’s most ephemeral.

And we need your support!

COMPANY continues to grow, and we're consistently creating dynamic and engaging work.

It's COMPANY's 5th and largest project, and we think it's got legs.  We believe that this premiere is just the beginning of Modulations, but we need to cover costs to continue development and plan for a bigger future.

Praise for COMPANY's work

"There was some fine dancing on March 5th [at The Lowest Form of Poetry,] especially by Tornow, who has a charismatic presence and beautiful alignment, not only with herself and the room, but with pure geometry... But then there were the little scurries and flurries of leaps that interject the random unknown into the set order... I left the room feeling buoyed, happy, serene; and the next day, I'm still feeling that lovely blue magic."
Kate Dobbs-Ariail, for CVNC

"Watching No. 15, I realized that Justin is an experimental artist: that is, in each new project, she isolates a few variables to play with and learn from... the results, I'm sure won't be lost on her."
Lightsey Darst

"...the essential quality of The Weights, which felt as if all unnecessary, obligatory movement had been pared away in rehearsal, so that what COMPANY presented felt like the result of going through a process together in a truly specific site."
Chris Vitiello, for INDY WEEK
