BLOOM BLOOM POW: A Queer-Joy Climate-Doom Comedy
BLOOM BLOOM POW: Emerging artists celebrating queer joy amid climate doom. A world premiere theatrical production.
We are incredibly proud of this production and all of the artists and technicians who came together to make BLOOM BLOOM POW possible.
Unfortunately, we experienced a few setbacks (including a broken projector and hiring additional production support due to COVID) which require us to set a stretch goal. If you are able to donate to help us cover these unforeseen costs, we so appreciate it. If you are not able to donate at this time, consider a social media post to help us promote the production as we go into the final week of shows.
THANK YOU again for supporting BLOOM BLOOM POW and all those involved. We wouldn’t be able to do it without you!
UPDATE - Thank you for helping us reach our initial goal! Can you help us reach our stretch goal of $6,000.00 to cover some unexpected last minute expenses?
- replacement projectors - hiring a videographer to film the performance
THANK YOU for any support you can give!
Hello! We are Genevieve, Katherine, Brittany, and Al – a group of independent artists producing the world premiere of BLOOM BLOOM POW, a theatrical play that celebrates queer joy in the face of climate devastation.
Bloom Bloom Pow isinspired by 1950s monster movies and the real-life 2014 crisis in Toledo, Ohio, when the tap water became deadly for humans because of toxic algal blooms.
In Bloom Bloom Pow, Mag, a nonbinary twentysomething, returns to their childhood home in a small conservative Ohio town. Everything is dull and weird and not queer at all. They are trying to keep it together despite desperate phone calls from their mom, chatty co-workers, and visions of melting icecaps and dead horses at the bottom of the east river. Mag's life gets more interesting (and sexy) when they meet The Creature and learn about the algae taking over the town's water supply. Will Mag save the city, or is it the algae's time to shine?
We are thrilled to be paying 27 NYC artists and technicians to help bring this project to life. We are $5,000 shy of our fundraising goal – can you help us get across the finish line?
Our production is already 85% funded, with generous support from NYSCA/A.R.T./New York Creative Opportunity Fund, The City Corps Artist Grant, Young Arts, and Arts Mid Hudson.
The majority of our budget (75%) goes toward artist salaries. Our budget as a Equity Showcase Code production is high because we want to pay artists higher than usual amounts on this kind of AEA contract. One of the most important parts of producing this piece was to model a more sustainable theatre-making-structure – to that end, we’re aiming to pay all artists a $20/hr rate.
Bloom Bloom Pow will be presented at The Jeffrey and Paula Gural Theatre at ART/New York Theaters September 16th through October 2nd. Are you in the area? You can also support the production by purchasing a ticket here: www.bloombloompowtheplay.com

Rehearsal Space
As a New Georges Supported Production, we were able to secure free and subsidized rehearsal and audition space. Rehearsal rooms were generously supplied to our production by New Georges, A.R.T./New York, The Brick, and WP Theatre.
A Note on Sustainability:
As a play about the climate crisis, our producing goal is for designs to be as close to zero-waste as possible. We intentionally created a small materials budget to limit waste, and have sourced nearly all design elements in the play from Materials For The Arts, New York City’s premiere creative reuse center.
