Directed by Hannah Baker, this fast-paced production reimagines Shakespeare's Roman tragedy as a dark political comedy in the spirit of films such as In the Loop and The Death of Stalin. We meet a collection of Ancient Roman senators - petty, city-dwelling, takeout-fueled politicians fractured into squabbling factions, each attempting to hypocritically advance their own agendas at one another's expense. Ambition, ego, and political maneuvering dominate the halls of power as Rome's leaders jockey for influence and control.
The mission of the Dream Role Players is to give the performers a bigger say in the productions. Playing a dream role, giving directing a try, putting up a new work, engaging the communities where we perform – all of these goals meet the mission of the Dream Role Players. We are primarily an outdoor Shakespeare troupe – for now. We hope to never leave those roots behind but we also hope to bring the Dream Role Players vibe to other kinds of productions.
As always, our outdoor performances are free to attend, but they are not free to produce. We rely on donations from our patrons to make it all possible. Bringing ancient Rome to life requires extras that are not always in our budget.
We need specialized costumes, armor, and weapons worthy of senators, soldiers, and generals. Roman tunics, military cloaks, shields, and swords all help transport our audience back to the final days of the Republic. The battle scenes and public assemblies require additional rehearsal time. Add that to our usual expenses - insurance, port-a-potties, stipends for cast and crew, transportation, and the daily work of setting up and packing away costumes, props, equipment, and scenery after every performance - and we could really use your help.
Your support helps us continue bringing free Shakespeare to the community and making these stories accessible to everyone. Thank you for helping us keep the spirit of live theater alive.
