SUMMARY
The Women’s Chorus (TWC), launched in Boston September 2018, connects self-identifying women experiencing homelessness or poverty with the healing power of music. We have already reached more than 100 of Boston’s most vulnerable women by offering an opportunity to build self-esteem through singing and by forming a community of singers, musicians, and volunteers.
We offer all women receiving shelter resources weekly “meetups” under the direction of a professional music director and a piano accompanist; complimentary private voice and piano lessons from volunteer musicians; and performances and outreach events in the area (e.g., Berklee CoM, New England Conservatory, Peabody Essex Museum). Each meetup is a stand alone musical experience. Everyone is invited to sing with us and there is no prior experience or audition requirement.
SUPPORT TWC & HELP MAKE "WHY WE SING" SUCCESSFUL
On Saturday, March 7th, 2020, TWC will be hosting a community driven choral celebration of International Women’s Day entitled "Why We Sing". Women from all over Boston are invited to come join TWC in a special version of our “Meetups.” During this event, we will celebrate the power of women through song and music making, while forging bonds with women from all over Boston and empowering those who are experiencing severe financial hardships and homelessness.
More generally, TWC needs your help so we can continue our weekly meetups and provide the curative powers of music to Boston's most vulnerable
We need to raise $5,000 support "Why We Sing" and the ongoing operations of TWC. This will be matched by a private donor providing we meet our goal. We need YOUR help!
Budget Breakdown:
- Event musicians & materials: $2,000
- Venue, marketing, & promotion: $1,000
- Ongoing operations: $2,000
THE IMPACT
Our "Why We Sing" day centers on music making, community building, and a celebration of women. The day will culminate in a free, public afternoon performance (1:30 PM) at Church of the Covenant on Newbury Street in Boston.
The day includes guests who will lead participants in various activities:
- Musicians will lead songs and the creation of a new song based on singer input
- Facilitator will lead various community building exercises
- Visual Artists will lead an art project to commemorate the day
