Excessive Realness is a queer dance intensive geared towards LGBTQIA+ people who consider themselves dancers or use movement as an expression for their own artistic practice. Started by Co-Directors Anthony Alterio and Allison Blakeney in 2018, Excessive Realness is gearing up for its second year, Excessive Realness 2019, which will take place in Boulder, Colorado, on June 27-30th, 2019. Classes will be dance and performance art based, 1.5 hours each, and will be held Thursday to Sunday. Each class will be taught every other day so that each teacher teaches twice during the intensive, and participants have the opportunity to learn from six brilliant artists. We will also hold a discussion panel during the intensive for artists and participants to discuss LGBTQIA+ issues in dance. On the Saturday of the intensive (June 29th), we will present The SPILL, a performance where the guest artists and participants will showcase upcoming or established work. This performance will take place in The Carsen Theater at the Dairy Arts Center and will be free and open to the public. 

Excessive Realness is raising money for two aims: to cover the costs of paying two local and four non-local artists to teach and perform and to sponsor students who need financial support to attend the intensive.

Money raised will go towards paying all 6 artists a teaching stipend, a performance fee, and for the four out of town artists, a travel and housing stipend. For example:

$150 allows us to pay an LGBTQIA+ artist to perform.

$250 pays for this same artist to teach one class at the intensive.

$250 sponsors a students to attend the intensive.

We strongly believe in fairly supporting LGBTQIA+ artists by offering reimbursement for what they will bring to the participants of Excessive Realness 2019. Many of these teachers have dedicated their lives to addressing LGBTQIA+ and social justice issues in their dance teaching and making. By donating to Excessive Realness’ campaign you will directly support LGBTQIA+ artists/teachers, help provide classes and perspectives from LGBTQIA+ artists from around the country, and help LGBTQIA+ work be shown in a public theater.

Furthermore, your support will provide more supportive spaces for LGBTQIA+ people to dance and create. Often times, gender and sexuality binary norms alienate and exclude LGBTQIA+ people who do not fit into these boxes. With your support, these harmful ideals are actively challenged through class structure and content. 

In order to carry out our vision for Excessive Realness 2019, which includes bringing two more artists/teachers than last year, we need to raise $5,000. We have received a commitment from a dedicated donor such that if Excessive Realness reaches 50 donors during this campaign, an extra $1,000 will be unlocked! Together we can raise the money needed to support some spectacular artists and provide a much needed space for LGBTQIA+ issues to be explored within dance.
