About Beyond the Wall || Más Allá del Muro:

On August 14-17, a group of international artists and migrant and 1st generation teens from across NYC will reimagine Beyond the Wall || Más Allá del Muro, a vibrant binational giant puppet performance that explores the complexity of national identity and celebrates human connection over political and social division, in residence at the Guggenheim Museum Education Department.

  • In 2017, five 15-foot-tall puppets made by teens growing up in the shadow of the US/Mexico border wall came together for the first iteration of this binational performance.
  • In 2019, 60 teens from either side of the wall connected as pen pals and emerging puppeteers.
  • In 2020, on the verge of our third major event, a new pilot program, and two massive new partnerships… the pandemic put us on pause.
  • NOW, in a changing social climate, we have the opportunity to reunite to celebrate our individual identities, our diverse and shared cultures, and to uplift and celebrate life in the borderlands.  The teens will join 6 artists from the US, Mexico, and Europe to reimagine and co-create this timely work, explore how the project’s themes resonate in today’s social and political climate – and build our first giant puppets in 4 years.

After our residency, we will spend 3 months planning our next borderlands event in Nogales Arizona, US and Nogales Sonora: a parade on both sides of the wall in downtown Nogales AZ/SON, led by a group of 15-foot tall puppets created by local teens. This binational borderlands art performance will be free to the public and family-friendly, and will collaboratively add infrastructure that supports artists and young people in Nogales’ thriving art scene as we build a better future together.

This isn’t just a performance: it’s a spectacle of cultures, a child- and teen-led art practice, and a chance to come together to celebrate all of the beauty of migration and life in the borderlands.

We have already secured HALF our budget in donations and in-kind support. Now, we are raising $10,000 to complete our budget. These funds will fly our international artists to New York and pay the project’s six artists a fair living wage through September.

Why this, why now?

What began as a project to address the dangerous, escalated militarization in the borderlands due to Trump’s politically-motivated falsehoods and oppressive policy, has grown into a project which seeks not only to confront these systemic abuses, but to engage and foster connections between diverse groups of migrant and borderlands youth. Beyond the Wall || Más Alla del Muro empowers young participants and their families to own their culture, personhood, and individuality amidst the complexities and challenges of a rapidly changing North America.

First person perspectives are often excluded from contemporary conversations around human migration and refugeeism, but artists and young people have honest, critical voices that can change the conversation. Beyond the Wall || Más Allá del Muro amplifies those voices to invite discussion and radical listening through play and positivity. Too often, the borderlands only make the news outside the region when something negative or challenging happens. Through this community-centric project, we offer a space to come together, to celebrate, to listen, and to respond.

Who We Are:

Flying Leap Productions produces thoughtful, participatory performance for families around complicated or difficult subject matter, for families to experience together. Our performances take place in the community, outside traditional theater spaces, and we make them in direct collaboration with our artists and our audience. With a core emphasis on accessibility and joy, our performances offer a foundation for discussion between children and their families.

We empower families to leap across perceived boundaries together and towards each other, into a more liberated world where kids have the agency to ask challenging questions and take action, and adults have the tools to navigate tough topics alongside them.

Flying Leap is a 2024-2025 recipient of the ART New York/Howard Gilman Foundation Small Theaters Fund, as well as grants from the New York City Artist Corps, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone.
