About

Godspell is first and foremost about transformation. Each character has a transforming experience that connects them to each other and to the Jesus character. It is very much an ensemble piece. Steven Schwartz makes a point of this in his note to directors preceding the script. He writes In addition to each individual being able to stand out, it is important that all be able to function as an ensemble, without any feeling that any one (other than Jesus) stands out above the others. That community phenomenon is what grabs the audience. Yes, there is an explicitly Christian setting for the play, but I think the broad appeal of this show over 50 years is not because it is about Jesus and the notion of salvation, but because it is about love of neighbor enabled by love of God. In this time and place I am committed to enabling mutual understanding by way of humility and love as a matter of survival.
