The Synopsis

Golden Boy is a drama about a brilliant journalist who tries to help a grieving man with superpowers so that he'll be able to save their city again.

The Intention

Golden Boy was written to be responsible storytelling:

  • Leading character Amy (the journalist) was designed to improve on Hollywood's recent leading female character tropes.  Producer, actress, and writer Brit Marling (The OA, Another Earth) beautifully discusses how recent Hollywood movies can do better in her article "I Don't Want to Be the Strong Female Lead."  Her article should be required reading for all screenwriters.

  • Golden Boy's percentage of dialogue by female characters (vs. male characters) exceeds the percentages in Black Swan, Gone Girl, Clueless, Sixteen Candles, The Queen, Frozen, Anastasia, Hanna, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Jane Eyre, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Lucy, among others.

  • The Golden Boy script deliberately rejects the traditional romantic B-story often found in big budget films.  Movies often idealize possessiveness in romantic relationships, so Golden Boy tells a different story.

Movies should entertain, but they can also be purposeful.  Golden Boy does both.

The Budget

The line item budget runs 7 pages, listing every expense from clearance reports through color correction.  But this pie chart is the gist of it:

The grand total minus what's already been spent leaves $138,000 to raise.  It's a lot of money, but our film aims to employ 19 people, be a union signatory, and do everything by the book.
