Drifting Sands Haibun - A Journal of Haibun and Tanka Prose is a literary initiative of the grahnArt Project and has offered its readers a wide range of haibun and tanka prose content along with other related forms for 5 years. We want to continue providing this service for years to come and are asking for your help in making this a reality.

About Drifting Sands:

We are Community Driven.

The journal runs completely on volunteer support. This includes the following people who work on each issue of the journal and also those who donate their time and effort as Guest Editors and Contest Judges.

Dr. Sangita Kalarickal (Editor-in-Chief)
Reid Hepworth (Associate Editor)
Richard Grahn (Founding Collaborative Artist)
Dr. Gabriel Ertsgaard (Copy Editor)
Pris Campbell (Facebook Correspondent)
Catherine Altimari (Librarian)

Add to this list the hundreds of poets from around the world who continue to contribute their writing to the journal. The result is a rewarding cross-culture experience for readers in every corner of the globe.

Funding Requirements

Currently, it costs approximately $1,500 per year to operate the journal and its associated project, Ripples in the Sand—the Drifting Sands podcast.

Here are some of the journal’s most notable expenses:

  • DSH website:
    • Web Hosting (yearly)
    • Domain Registration (yearly)
    • Backup services (yearly)
    • Static IP address (yearly)
  • Podcasting Interview Platform (yearly)
  • Software Subscriptions (most are yearly)
  • Membership Fees (varies)
  • Privacy Policy (needs updating) (yearly)
  • Accounting and Tax services (ongoing)
  • Misc. office expenses (as needed)

The time has come to ask for your support. Your tax-deductible donation (in the US) can help cover these expenses so we can continue to bring you the fresh, relevant, and relatable content you have come to expect from this journal. Your donation guarantees the continuity of this platform for global poetic voices.

Our short-term strategy focuses on raising $1,500 through this crowdfunding campaign and our regular donations page on the website to cover our expenses for 2025. Your donation (any size) will help bring us closer to this goal.

Our long-term strategy will include applying for grants that will help support the journal for the long-run and contribute to the further development of our services designed to foster the growth of the haibun/tanka prose community.

We understand that not everyone is in a position to give monetarily. If that's the case for you, we would very much appreciate it if you would share this fundraising effort with others who may be interested in contributing. Drifting Sands Haibun is a community initiative, and it will take a community effort to reach these financial goals.

Thank you for your support and for spreading the news.

Sincerely,
