About State of Emergency/State of The Earth:
We are two dear friends who are artists and passionate about justice. After the pandemic, we came together to research curating an event that combined our desire to highlight both racial and environmental injustice. We are raising funds to bring this exciting event to the public that will be free for all.
The Event:
Artists raise awareness and reflect back to us the world we live in. They tell our stories and help us reimagine the world we hope to create.
Boston artist, Dawna Davis and Argentinian artist Liliana Folta, harness the power of global artists and local fashion designers to shine a light on racial and environmental inequities.
Through design in the State of Emergency Runway Show, they encourage the breakdown of barriers between races, cultures and genders as well as offer exposure to established and emerging designers in underserved areas of the city. These designers highlight the issues of systemic racism, wealth gap, human rights, allyship and environmental issues.
State of the Earth, an art/science exhibition, brings together a group of women artists from different parts of the world. They raise awareness of the importance of native plants and how they help pollinators survive. The connection of human health to environmental and planetary health strengthens our emotional resilience.
Attendees will have an opportunity to enjoy the work of established and emerging artists and designers while learning about the persistence of racial injustice, a worsening climate and dwindling biodiversity from the artists’ perspective.
Liliana Folta is an interdisciplinary artist, independent curator and advocate of native plants. After leaving her country she had the great opportunity to get involved in multicultural environments as she lived in different parts of the world. She materialized her concepts into ceramic, sculpture, installation and painting.
Liliana has exhibited extensively, nationally and internationally. During her stay in Berlin, Germany, she presented her social-political and environmental projects in international cultural platforms, such as Humboldt University Berlin for Berlin Science Week; François Schneider Foundation Contemporary Art Center, France; Berlin Art Week - Global Group 3000 Sustainable Art Gallery; and Art in the Gerichtshöfe, the Art District Wedding, Berlin. Other projects: United Nations 75: Global Conversations 2020; Rockefeller Center, NYC "The Flag Project"; Danforth Art Museum MA; Lesley University - "Earth Day" - Boston, MA; The Umbrella Art Center - "Earth Month" MA
For the past three years, she has been practicing sustainable gardening and researching the native plants of the American Northeast. She inherited her passion for plants from her father in Argentina, where she grew up among abundant flowers, fruit trees and vegetable gardens.
During her travels, she met many extraordinary women artists and thought that one day she would bring them together to show the world the power of their creativity using the native plants of their homeland as a voice for the fragility of biodiversity. Thus, State of The Earth was born.
Dawna Davis: Dawna's background is varied. She was a special education teacher and a trainer and developer in the corporate world. After living in Southern California and Perth, Australia, she came home to Boston. Dawna came to art later in her career. Self taught, for the last 27 years she has had an affair with wire... first creating wire wrapped jewelry and later what she calls wire attire. Creating clothing and accessories from Parawire and semi precious gems brought her to the world of runway shows and collaboration with design schools and other designers in the Greater Boston area. Her curated runway shows and wearable art exhibitions include:
Wearable Art and the WOW Factor, Walk, Strut and Dance Runway Show, OUTLOUD! Runway Show, Behold: The Art of Adornment Runway Show, and freshly woven Runway Show
Dawna's runway philosophy tends to be less formal.. stressing the joy of celebrating the designers, their creations and models.

Your donation, however, goes well beyond the runway show and art exhibit.
Your generosity will support the mission and work of two Boston based organizations committed to strengthening communities by building connections:
Haley House seeks to affirm the dignity of individuals by challenging systems of oppression and engaging neighborhoods in solving problems related to food and housing insecurity.
SPOKE Art (Formerly Medicine Wheel Productions) activates the transformative power of art to heal divisions, strengthen communities and drive change.
Art becomes a tool that guides us toward racial and social progress.
As artists, designers and models, we are often asked to donate our time and creations for silent auctions and fundraisers. Since many of us are self supporting, this becomes a strain on our finances. We feel art is an important and needed part of our culture and artists and performers should be paid for their time and creations. Part of the budget will go to the production of the event as well as rentals, materials, printing, and other essentials.
Your contribution means the world to all of us — the organizing committee, designers, models, performers, artists and curators. Thank you so much for your consideration and support!
If you are in the Boston area on September 9th, please attend the art exhibition opening and runway show. You won't be disappointed!
