Adjustments to our Booking

A few weeks ago, Out of the Box Theatrics, the company helming Theatre 154, reached out to ask if we’d be willing to adjust our booking. A scheduling conflict arose after they received an unexpected grant to premiere a new off-Broadway musical. While we are excited about producing Cymbeline at Theatre 154, we are even more excited to nourish this new relationship with Out of the Box. They generously offered to secure us another, comparable venue and cover any associated overage from our originally agreed upon rate. After touring the proposed space and conferring with our team, we’ve decided to move Cymbeline to St. Luke’s Theatre for the new show dates of May 22-June 1st.

St. Luke’s Theatre is located in a fantastic spot just a short distance from Times Square on Restaurant Row. Out of the Box is currently in talks with St. Luke’s to take over the management of this theatre space, and we’re grateful a move would not mean the end of our relationship with Out of the Box. There are also some distinct advantages to the St. Luke’s space. It is larger, with a capacity of 178 to Theatre 154’s 74. The booking dates would be slightly different, though our run would be longer: May 19-June 1st instead of our original May 12-22 booking (this includes 3 days of tech rehearsals).

Again, the offered amenities are comparable; the theatre has a comfortable and clean lobby with a bar license, large private backstage area for actors with kitchenette, laundry, and showers, and full light and sound capabilities. Like Theatre 154, St. Luke’s Theatre is a historic space in a well-trafficked area (and just a stone’s throw away from Broadway!). We are particularly excited about St. Luke’s commitment to the community– they offer a great deal of resources and programming, including a soup kitchen. This partnership could allow Hamlet Isn't Dead to give back and reach new audiences in our constant quest for accessibility in the classical space.

Thank you for supporting this shift and for continuing to donate to our goal which now, with a longer performance run and greater audience capacity, carries even more weight! Help us reach $6500 by April 15th! #ThanksJupiter
Cymbeline will be Hamlet Isn’t Dead’s 32nd mainstage production, bringing us that much closer to completing Shakespeare’s full canon! We are thrilled to announce that we will be producing the Bard’s wackiest play at St. Luke’s Theatre at 46th St and 8th Avenue. For the first time as a company, we are producing a mainstage in a fully-outfitted theatre, but we need your help to keep the (spot)lights on!

Hamlet Isn’t Dead?
Hamlet Isn’t Dead (HID) was founded in 2012 with the simple and ambitious goal of producing the entirety of Shakespeare’s canon in chronological order. Since then, we have produced thirty-one of the thirty-eight shows we consider canon, as well as dozens of other series, projects, one-shots, and original works. We have also honed our distinctive style of performance, coined "HIDiocy." We use direct address, live music, and an emphasis on joy and humor to create a theatrical environment that is open to all. Our mission is to create Shakespeare that is fun and accessible to all audiences, regardless of their exposure to classical works. Our work and its insistence on serving, representing, and reaching NYC’s multifaceted audience truly set us apart from the traditional classical scene.

Why Cymbeline?
Cymbeline will be an ensemble-heavy showcase of our Resident Acting Company (or HIDiots!) directed by HID Company Director Valerie Peter Chong (Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra). Our Version of Cymbeline (affectionately called CymbelMEME by company members) tackles an incomprehensible world with absurdity as a tool, and will also feature our classic brand of HIDiocy; audiences should expect an accessible, inviting, musical, and hilarious experience from the minute they arrive, as we carry them through the parallel arcs of Posthumus and Imogen, testing their agency against the forces of fate.

Cymbeline will be performed May 22-June 1, 2025 at St. Luke’s Theatre and will provide performance opportunities exclusive to our Resident Acting Company. Casting and other details coming soon!

Why are we moving?
The transition to St. Luke’s represents a larger shift in production quality for Hamlet Isn't Dead. The historic venue and community space is just a stone’s throw away from Broadway. The theatre comes with ample audience seating “in the round,” fully-outfitted lighting and sound grids, lobby and bar for patrons, and private showers, laundry, and kitchenette for artists. We are also thrilled to collaborate with St. Luke’s and support the incredible work they do for their community. Finally, we believe we can thrive in this neighborhood and luxuriate in our irreverent, colorful, and unconventional style amongst audiences that welcome such sensibilities.

Change is exciting but it’s also resource-intensive. Our venue rental costs for Cymbeline reflect the quality of the theater’s amenities as well as its desirable location. You and St. Luke’s Theatre can be our deus ex machina, but God is expensive! Help us stabilize and thrive during this transitional period so that we can continue to bring you great theatre beyond this season! #ThanksJupiter

What am I paying for?

We need to raise $6500 by April 15th to cover our 14 day booking (includes tech rehearsals). Not only is this space a clean, inviting, and accessible environment for our audiences, St. Luke’s also provides comfortable dressing rooms and a private greenroom for performers.

100% of your contribution to this campaign will go to the rental costs associated with our booking at St. Luke’s Theatre for Cymbeline (excepting any processing fees from Fractured Atlas).
