Lots of news about "Hidden"

We have lots of news to share about HIDDEN! First of all, we have a video on our website of the May show with captions. https://hiddenthemusical.com/photos-videos/

Second, we have been working with Rick Sperling (Founder & Director of Mosaic Youth Theater, director, writer, actor, teacher and dramaturg) to edit and improve the script. We also just applied to the Eugene O'Neill National Musical Theatre Conference. If chosen we would spend 2 weeks working on the musical with theater professionals and have a public reading of the show. It is highly competitive, but if we got in it would be an amazing experience!
Rick Sperling and David Heitler-Klevans

Third, we have made some professional recordings of some of the songs from "Hidden." We will be putting them up on the website soon. In the meantime, you can listen to "Never Again Means Never Again." https://hiddenthemusical.com/audio/ Check back in a few days to get updated versions.

Our hearts go out to all the victims and loved ones during this heart-wrenching time. As we say in the song "No more killing civilians, no matter which side." Making professional recordings is expensive, so if you would like to donate through Fractured Atlas we would greatly appreciate it. https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/hidden-the-musical

Thank you again for your support! - Jenny & David

New, improved version of "Hidden" video

Dear supporter of "Hidden",

We have some news to share regarding our musical -  we finally have an improved version of the video of "Hidden" livestream from the Sunday, May 21 performance.  We have added captions, and tried to fix some of the balance problems.  The biggest hold-up was dealing with the French song ("Chanson d'automne"), which caused YouTube to block the video initially due to copyright issues.  We finally found a way to license the song at the level which allowed us to re-record it.

Here is the link:
Please feel free to share the link far and wide!  Originally we had thought to charge a small fee for the link, but now we are just encouraging people to donate if they wish: https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/hidden-the-musical

There have been requests to have a showing or "watch party" of the video at various places, including synagogues and Senior Centers.  If you are interested in doing that, please contact us: david2kind@gmail.com. It may be possible for us to come and do a short talk-back afterward.

Update on what is happening with the musical:

We are committed to improving the musical and getting it out to more places. We would love to see a fully staged production of this work. To that end, we are now working with a dramaturg (kind of like a book editor, but for theater) to help us shape and improve the show. We're getting things ready to apply to several festivals and we would like to start reaching out to local theaters. If you have connections to a theater, please let us know.

We are also going to work on a shorter, traveling version to bring to schools and synagogues. All this takes time and money. If you would like to donate to help us move this piece along we would greatly appreciate it. You can donate here: https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/hidden-the-musical

Thank you so much for all your support!

The Hidden cast meets Ruth

Last week Ruth Kapp Hartz, the subject of the musical Hidden had the opportunity to meet the cast during rehearsal at David & Jenny's house. It was very exciting for everyone. The cast asked Ruth some questions and sang her a song from the musical. We had a professional photographer on hand to document the meeting.

Don't forget to buy your tickets if you're planning to come see the musical in person - tickets are going fast (especially for Sunday May 21st). Here is the link: https://hiddenthemusical.ticketleap.com/hidden/

Tickets are available!

Hi everyone,

We have some exciting updates for the musical Hidden! Tickets are now available and you are getting the first invitation before we share it with everyone. To buy your ticket go here: hiddenthemusical.ticketleap.com/hidden/ . Also, a portion of the ticket sales will go toward Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center. This is the only organization that celebrates and recognizes the role of non-Jewish rescuers during the Holocaust. The Fedous and Valat families who helped hide Ruth and her parents have been honored by Yad Vashem.

We hope you will be able to join us in person on Saturday May 20th at 7:30 PM and/or on Sunday May 21st at 2:00 PM (talk-back after the show) at Abington Friends School in Jenkintown, PA. If you can't come in person, we will be live-streaming the show so you can purchase a live-stream ticket and we will send you the link closer to the time of the show.

We have been rehearsing regularly in our house and the cast sounds great! We can't wait to share it with you. We also have a publicist who will help us get the word out about the show so we can have lots of people in the audience and generate interest in general. I don't know if we mentioned that our sons Ari & Jason are part of the cast - extra special for us. Plus (and we are saying this objectively) they have wonderful voices.

Cast chosen & special program this Sunday 3/12/23

We are so excited to let you know that we have chosen our cast for the show on May 20 & 21! Many of the performers are professional actors so this promises to be an amazing production. We're also thrilled to announce that our sons, Ari & Jason, will be part of the ensemble. We will be sharing more about the performers in future emails.

We have a special performance of the music from "Hidden" this Sunday. In this hybrid program on March 12, presented together with HAMEC, Women of KI, Adult Ed, Meyers Library, & TJ Museum, Acoustic Blender will perform songs from the musical "Hidden" written by David & Jenny Heitler-Klevans, which is based on the true story of Ruth Kapp Hartz, who as a young Jewish girl was hidden in Southern France during World War II.  Ruth herself will introduce the program.  This is a hybrid event and can be attended both live and virtually.
KI Info: (215) 887-8700; Program Info: (215) 782-8258
Admission: $20 in advance; $25 at the door

Your support is making all of this possible! Thanks, David & Jenny

Thank you and update on Hidden campaign

We are extremely honored and humbled by the generosity of all of you who donated to our fundraising campaign to put on our musical "Hidden" in May!  We can't thank you enough!  It feels very affirming that so many people see this as a valuable project worthy of support.  We actually exceeded our official goal by a considerable amount, partly thanks to the generous matching challenge from an anonymous donor (although this is not yet reflected in the number on the Fractured Atlas site).  Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

When all the donations come in and are processed we will have 148 donors who raised approximately $30,000!!  This is amazing and will be used to put on a great show including live musicians and video elements. We will also be able to finish creating professional recordings of all the songs and do a comprehensive PR campaign so we can fill up the theater. Our plan is that this staged concert reading is the first step in getting a fully staged production into a theater. Just FYI - we can still accept donations through Fractured Atlas.Thank you again and we will keep you updated on our progress.
- Jenny & David

Robin gives special thanks to Jenny and David for their confidence in choosing me to be a part of a truly significant and educationally crucial project. Robin also thanks Justin, Lys, Jim, Rodney and Seth for their incredible and brilliant contributions. Hidden: The Musical
Hidden is a musical theater piece by David & Jenny Heitler-Klevans based on the true story of Ruth Kapp Hartz, who as a young Jewish girl was hidden in Southern France during World War II. Forced to change her name to Renée in order to appear French, Ruth and her family rely on the kindness of strangers in a small French village. From a secret apartment to a basement hideout to a Catholic orphanage in a convent, Renée must hide her true identity and learn to survive through a series of harrowing events. Dealing with themes related to identity, allies, fascism, anti-Semitism, refugees, resilience and resistance, this musical will resonate with audiences today.

We have created this fundraising campaign to cover the costs of putting on a staged concert reading of the complete musical including the entire script and all of the songs, with professional quality actors/singers, video elements, and live musicians. The staged concert reading of Hidden will take place on May 20 and 21, 2023 at Abington Friends School Theater in Jenkintown, PA.

Please help us get this timely and important show onto the stage with a generous donation. Thank you so much!

Donations will be used for the following expenses:
  • Honoraria for Director and Music Directors
  • Honoraria for actors and musicians
  • Theater, technical and janitorial expenses
  • Video production for video elements in the show
  • Audio production for professional recordings of songs
  • Advertising
