Hinge Quartet is commissioning four awesome composers with premieres throughout this season and next!

ABOUT US:
Praised as “experimental and ethereal” and a “welcome addition to the new music scene,” Hinge Quartet is made up of Philipp Stäudlin (saxophones), Dan VanHassel (electric guitar), Matt Sharrock (percussion), and Keith Kirchoff (piano). Lying somewhere between a chamber ensemble and an avant-garde rock band, Hinge Quartet combines cutting-edge contemporary classical and experimental music with seamless multimedia integration and the innovative re-imagining of rock and pop songs.

THE COMMISSIONING PROJECT:
Hinge Quartet is passionate about expanding our repertoire to include diverse voices, perspectives, and aesthetics. We have selected four composers whose work we are super excited about! Chen-Hui Jen is a Taiwanese-American composer, poet, and pianist based in Miami whose music presents an imaginative, spiritual, and poetic space. Bahar Royaee writes music that combines timbral atmospheric structures with lyrical influences derived from her Iranian background. Kirsten Volness creates music that is both groovy and graceful, through the refined use of electronics and modern composition techniques overlaid with jazz and pop influences. LJ White's music explores strange and evocative sonorities, rhythms, concise gestures, and apposite forms. He is strongly interested in the physical voice (spoken, sung, emulated, and as metaphor,) popular culture, issues of gender identity and queerness, and sociopolitical conditions.
