Justice? Or...Just Me? started out as a ten minute monologue developed in a Skid Row workshop and was performed in the chapel of Union Rescue Mission in 2008. It has been performed for over ten years with the idea that it would be a full length show.
It was workshopped in REDCAT's Studio in 2018 where multi-media was used for the first time. After attending many writing workshops, I have since realized that the story is too big for just one hour. The ten minute piece now takes its place as the prologue to this trilogy that tells the story of how a Black woman leaving a domestic violence marriage ends up on Skid Row.
What if to save your life you have to lose everything?
It is the journey of a character that rises from the ashes. The play is meant to be accessible to all audiences. This means it will be able to be performed with multi-media and without. I jokingly like to think I would be able to perform it even in a car.
The feedback I've received from audiences is that the story is eerily similar to their own and that I need to finish it so that their story can be told as well. Domestic violence has many victims.
This summer, August, I will be producing Justice? Or...Just Me?: The Bite in the Hollywood Fringe Festival. The venue I'm looking at would be around $400 a night and I want to do 4 performances with 2 dates of tech and rehearsal in the space. Production costs will go to the live streaming tech, stage manager, director, and marketing. Costs also include the Justice? Or...Just Me?: The Bite book that I want to give to select donors.
