La Nuestra Tango Festival is a 100% community-led project. Our mission is to provide opportunities and visibility to marginalized groups, by building diverse, inclusive events where audiences and participants can experience the beauty and magic of Argentine Tango. Tango culture was created by the diverse contributions of immigrants, so by its very nature it should be inclusive and welcoming to all. However barriers of gender, race, class, sexual orientation, age and finance have frequently limited who is visible, who can participate, and what roles are available to those who do participate.
We are working to break down these barriers, by creating many different ways in which participants can engage in an inclusive tango experience. This includes but is not limited to: learning to dance tango in whatever role pleases each person, experiencing tango music from an all-female, diversity affirming tango orchestra in North America, participating in community conversations, lectures, and social events, and discovering what tango culture can mean to each and every one of us in an environment designed to foster inclusion and belonging. The event will be facilitated by a diverse cast of teachers, musicians, performers and artists whose contribution to the culture of tango have often been disregarded. Their presence and visibility in this festival will allow community members and future participants to envision themselves as part of this culture and movement.
We need your help! We can achieve our goal if 450 people donate an average of $80!
A key element of this initiative is to provide equitable and fair compensation for all personnel, support local arts and cultural venues that share similar values and create thoughtful scholarships, allowing anyone to participate with dignity and ease. These scholarships will allow us to reach the broader communities in Brooklyn, enriching and expanding our tango community.
- Compensation for over 30 artists, designers, organizers, facilitators and technicians - 26 of whom are women.
- Venue fees, so that we can host this event in a local arts and cultural hub, making it easily accessible to the public and our community
- Scholarships so that everyone can participate, helping to subvert class and financial boundaries
Thank you, and please consider supporting La Nuestra Tango Festival.
Your tax-deductible contribution can help create the tango future for everyone!
