Hi!
Liviera here – creative lead and director of Last Call Theatre’s next immersive & interactive show, The Liminary, coming this spring.
My family and I immigrated to the US on asylum when I was a child. Growing up, I was taught that America was a land of immigrants, a melting pot, and that is what made us strong as a nation. I also learned that not everyone believes that. Unfortunately, there have always been individuals who think that people who look a certain way or come from certain backgrounds do not belong here.
Those voices have gotten a lot louder in the last few years. Still, through my upbringing and even now, I call this country home, and have a deep love for the United States despite not being a citizen of it for most of my life. I know that for every voice telling us to “go back where we came from,” there are a dozen others that welcome us with open arms. For every person that wants us gone, there are more that are fighting for our right to be here.
I love devised theatre because it is grounded in truth and community, and I’m excited to be working on a story that has parts of everyone involved in it. It’s set in a slightly different world, but it is also our own. It is a show about our own perspectives and experiences, and the journey of the American experiment that we are all on together.
I’ve worked on many Last Call productions and my goal is always to create spaces where we can come together as a community to share experiences and create a story together. Audiences come as they are and often see themselves in the characters, then hopefully they are able to see elements of the show in the world around us as well. It is a special kind of magic to me that each night, there will never be the same group of people creating the same experience ever again.
The Liminary is the story of us, one that is constantly in the making. This project is a testament to what we can create together: safety, connection, community. It is just as much for the people creating it as the ones attending. This show is proof that no one – no government, no laws, no borders – can tell us where we do or do not belong.
We hope you’ll consider supporting our exploration of immigration, belonging, resistance, community, and hope.
In order to create immersive theatre at the level that Last Call does (The Liminary being our 12th show in 4 years) we need your support in funding this project. With dehumanization and violence ravaging our communities and a rise in AI content overtaking the arts landscape, we need community spaces and human-driven experiences now more than ever.
Thank you for helping us tell our stories. We hope you’ll tell us yours too.
Sincerely,
Liviera Lim & The Liminary Team
The Show:
History is the stories you choose to tell.
The year is 2042, the year that the U.S. Census Bureau once predicted a minority-majority, with white Americans making up less than 50% of the population. In the world of “The Liminary,” the U.S. never reaches that statistic. What does it look like to expand the government’s increasingly narrow definition of who belongs there? When immigration to and from the U.S. has ceased, how do we create our own definition of what it means to be an “American?”
“Limen” or “liminis” is Latin for threshold, doorway, entrance, limit. In “The Liminary,” audience members stand on this threshold as they enter a secret safehouse granting respite to those who need it. Safety, hope, community, or the chance to leave their lives behind and seek a future somewhere else – these are the things that those who enter are tasked with creating. Exploring the stories of the people who have come, those who stay, and those who are leaving, what does it look like to come together resiliently, vulnerably, and hopefully?
