This is a Fiscally-Sponsored Project

From the multidimensional mind of Licity Collins—ONE DEATH IN SEVEN DOORWAYS is a spoken-word opera exploring the fracturing of self and time that occurs when someone close to us (whether we love them or not) dies.

YOUR DONATION will help fund the writing of the Libretto (script) for this project. The first draft is already well in process, thanks to a powerful artists residency at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, where I was able to totally concentrate on writing. There is a special kind of quiet and full attention that is required when writing the voices of characters—you have to be 100% present for long periods of time in order to hear all they have to say. This funding is to support me to continue to give 100% to those quiet focused hours so the characters can be as full and rich as they are meant to be. There will be a later funding drive to support the collaborative music writing process with several other artists, rehearsals, and the final staged production. This very special funding drive is to support me to create the core of the work. THANK YOU.

The production of ONE DEATH IN SEVEN DOORWAYS features eight actors, eight solo musicians, and one vocalist. It explores the fracturing of time and self that happens when death enters our lives. It is monologue-driven, with selective dialogue between spoken and sung language. It culminates in a full-company suite of language and sound.

Yep, it's a big vision—the biggest project I have made yet.

Two characters: Sam—played by 8 different actors of various shapes, sizes, colors, genders, and ages. Suzy—played by a single vocalist. In the first scene, Suzy talks with Sam. After she dies, Suzy only sings.

Eight solo musicians: Each Sam is scored by a single solo artist similar to the scored prose stories in my 2022 release, THE FLOWER IN THE MIRROR WAS DEAD. We first met Sam and Suzy in that work in the story titled, "Rest."

ONE DEATH IN SEVEN DOORWAYS
invites the audience to experience the deconstruction of time, reality, perception, and self. When someone close to you dies, time fractures. You fracture. Reality fractures. You become more than one self, in each moment, in every moment. You become hauntingly aware that the past, present, and future are all simultaneous. It reminds us that the grief process does not unfold in a linear fashion with a beginning middle and end, but rather draws us into the continuing process of grief—with a beginning and ever-evolving middle.

One Death in Seven Doorways is developed in part during a 2023 Black Art/Ists artist residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology.
