The funds raised in this campaign will support the costs associated with the production of HORSE, a 20 minute stand-alone film, a segment, the structural backbone, the production’s starting point and a fundraising tool for my first feature length film Long walks with Anzaldúa, a documentary about the influential scholar, poet, social critic, philosopher, Chicana dyke-feminist, Gloria Anzaldúa (1942-2004).

HORSE  is based on a series of poems from Un Agitado Viento, Ehecatl, The Wind (An agitated wind, Ehecatl, The Wind), a chapter in Anzaldúa's book Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987).

The series of poems portrays incidents of supremacist racist violence against a Chicano family, told from the perspective of a young girl. The poems show the effects this violence has on her, her family, and her identity.  HORSE is named after a poem of the same name, which is included in the larger series of poems in the aforementioned chapter.

The estimated production timeline for HORSE  is August 2021-September 2022.

I am traveling to the US/ Mexico border region in Baja California, Mexico in August, November, January, March and June to produce HORSE in the border towns of Tecate and Tijuana. I will  be working again with both local producer Santiago Madera and sound designer Tonalli Magaña. They are committed to continue working with me due to the success of my previous short film Cuando La Rumorosa Calla (When La Rumorosa Quiets, 17min, in Spanish with English subtitles, Mexico, 2020). I am confident that with this stellar team, I will bring this project to fruition.

*Cuando La Rumorosa Calla  (When La Rumorosa Quiets, 17min, in Spanish with English subtitles, Mexico, 2020) is currently showing in festivals and not available for public viewing but trailers, descriptions and awards can be seen at patriciamontoya.space and on Facebook @cuandolarumorosacallatheshort

Your support will solidify the necessary credibility to continue fundraising and gain access to resources for Long walks with Anzaldúa, an ambitious and necessary project I am committed to making.  I hope you will join me.

Original Huichol Art Magnet From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Huichol art broadly groups the most traditional and most recent innovations in the folk art and handcrafts produced by the Huichol people, who live in the states of Jalisco, Durango, Zacatecas and Nayarit in Mexico. The unifying factor of the work is the colorful decoration using symbols and designs which date back centuries. The most common and commercially successful products are "yarn paintings" and objects decorated with small commercially produced beads. Yarn paintings consist of commercial yarn pressed into boards coated with wax and resin and are derived from a ceremonial tablet called a neirika. The Huichol have a long history of beading, making the beads from clay, shells, corals, seeds and more and using them to make jewelry and to decorate bowls and other items. The "modern" beadwork usually consists of masks and wood sculptures covered in small, brightly colored commercial beads fastened with wax and resin.
