"With the creation of Loop38, something electrifying has arrived in Houston."Girl at the Opera. "Loop38 in Groundbreaking Houston Debut" (Dec. 2016)
Loop38 is a collective of passionate musicians bringing new music to the heart of Houston. Co-founded in the spring of 2016 by pianist Yvonne Chen and conductor Jerry Hou at the Shepherd School of Music, Loop38 specializes in creating contemporary music experiences, performing works for large ensemble - an instrumentation that allows the full timbral spectrum of an orchestra while also showcasing the virtuosic solo capabilities of its musicians. Named after the 38-mile freeway ("the loop") that the musicians identify as home, Loop38 focuses on performing and curating music of living composers in meaningful and memorable aural experiences.

"young and dynamic" "brilliantly conceived program"
"I come to new music concerts in venues like the Turrell Skyspace to experience the moment, to surrender myself to the mysteries of sound. Loop38 took me there with a brilliantly conceived program. It was music from an immense space, sometimes ethereal, sometimes earthy, illuminated by our own individual realities. It is music that makes me aware and awake."Arts and Culture Texas. "Color into Sound: Loop38 at Turrell Skyspace" (March 2017)
Why now?
So far, we’ve been largely able to do these projects with the sheer determination and passion of our musicians donating their time and talents, and the help of the Shepherd School of Music and Musiqa. However, as we are about to tackle our largest ensemble project ever, while also planning for the future of Loop38, we realize to succeed in continuing to bring this music to the communities at little to no cost, we require more logistical and financial resources.
Where does the money go?
All of our musicians have volunteered their talents and time to put these performances together. We hope to recognize their dedication and commitment with an honorarium, and to continue attracting the most talented players.
Our score rentals and instrument rentals (piano and percussion) are the largest parts of our budget. With your financial support, we won't have to be limited programmatically based on the costs of using specific instruments on a piece.
