An adventurer appears, offering a quest. Adopting the eager Nat, and the reluctant Jo, as “squires”, the adventurer leads the two best friends on an unexpected journey through their seemingly dull town. The call to battle is answered. A parakeet must be avenged. And it starts to become clear: the adventurer is hiding something.

"Fear doesn't go away. The warrior and the artist live by the same code of necessity, which dictates that the battle must be fought anew every day." -Steven Pressfield

Why is it important?

Louisville Hivemind Artist Collective—or LouHive for short--is performing arts without permission. We believe there is a space for YOUR story and we strive to collaborate with our rich arts community by bringing these stories to life. LouHive is whatever this community is, and it’s growing in scope and scale on the daily.

We are bringing a new genre of theatre to Louisville and creating a safe, inclusive community for performers and creators to collaborate and explore their craft in new ways. We are focusing on how stage combat goes hand in hand with self-care and mental health and how it lends to practicing safe communication on stage and off.
To Battle was purposefully written to be gender and race flexible--any person can inhabit any role. Our playwright José is passionate about telling the stories that any and all persons can be warriors, not just buff cis dudes (though we love them too!). All bodies, all shapes, sizes, and range of movement can and should tell stories through movement.

In To Battle, all of the characters have been written in a way that they could be any gender. The script is written in gender neutral “they/them/theirs”, and based on the gender of the actors who take on the roles, gender pronouns in the script can be adjusted to match if they so chose.

“After a traumatic birth experience, I have had a difficult relationship with my physical being---whether it be physical limitations I now have or the mental toll those limitations take because of self-doubt and social stigmas to which we are subjected. I want to create a community where everyone feels empowered to explore stage combat and physical theatre, no matter what.” - Producer Dara Jade Tiller’s “Why”

Your Impact

Your donations are monumental in making
To Battle a success and insuring that LouHive can continue to expand our programming and offer both production opportunities and training!

Here are some of the ways you will be contributing to To Battle and, in turn, our local arts community and beyond:

Supporting the artists
  • All cast members will receive a stipend and will also receive a bonus if we have a budget surplus. Let’s deliver! The creative team will also be compensated for their superlative artistic skills and important contribution. It takes so many to bring a single production to life. By investing in theatre artists, you help sustain a vibrant and thriving arts community that enriches our lives and culture.

Performance and rehearsal space fees
  • Access to affordable performance and rehearsal space can be a significant artistic barrier. The prohibitive costs associated with securing suitable venues can severely limit creative endeavors and emerging artists often find themselves forced to compromise artistic vision and struggling to find a platform. Your support will help us secure safe, inclusive spaces to work and perform!

Production Costs
  • From insurance to aprons, swords to spatulas---your donation will fund the plethora of components needed to mount this production of To Battle so we can bring a fully-realized experience to our audiences!
