En menos de un mes vamos a grabar Mareas a la deriva en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mareas a la deriva es el cortometraje tesis de la directora Camila Rodríguez López y productora Valentina Eguiguren Armbruster.
NUESTRA PELÍCULA
Cuatro años después de mudarse a Nueva York, la hermana mayor de MAITE (Camelia Muñiz), SOFÍA (Gabriela Saker), regresa a Puerto Rico para celebrar el cumpleaños de su mamá, PATRICIA (Denise Quiñones). Maite y su madre se encuentran con una versión nueva de Sofía, lo que genera tensión en la dinámica familiar, y causa que Maite se pregunte cómo cambiaría su vida si decidiera seguir los pasos de su hermana e irse de Puerto Rico. A lo largo de este corto, exploramos el duelo de los corazones que se quedan, el deseo de encajar en un sitio al que ya no perteneces, y el amor hacia Puerto Rico que sentimos desde acá y desde allá.
El guión de este cortometraje fue parte de la selección oficial del National Film Festival for Talented Youth en Seattle, y con la mentoría y recursos que recibió en este festival está siendo producido como el cortometraje tesis de la directora en NYU Tisch School of the Arts en el programa de bachillerato de producción de cine y televisión.
Tanto el elenco como el equipo técnico de este cortometraje nos permitirá crear una pieza audiovisual y emocionalmente poderosa - y ¡graciosa! Mientras que la imagen y el sonido están diseñados detalladamente para alcanzar la especificidad emocional de cada personaje, le vamos a dar a las actrices la libertad de improvisar acciones y diálogo en el guión, lo que nos permitirá alcanzar un tono jovial, refrescante, sincero, y lúdico, claves para lograr la poesía y la excepcionalidad de este novedoso concepto cinematográfico.
LA CAMPAÑA
¿Por qué estamos pidiendo dinero?
El rodaje inicia en menos de un mes y todavía necesitamos recaudar $15,000 para cubrir los costos de la producción y la pos-producción.
La mayor parte de nuestro presupuesto se destina a comidas para el elenco y el equipo, tarifas de ubicación y transporte. Nuestro equipo trabaja diligentemente sin recibir remuneración, por lo que queremos alimentarlos generosamente en el set como agradecimiento por su tiempo. El resto se destinará a equipamiento y diseño de producción. Todas estas son herramientas que nos ayudarán a crear un mundo más creíble y una película con un aspecto más profesional.
Hacer cine independiente es duro en cualquier sitio, pero aquí en Puerto Rico la comunidad de cine está enfrentando retos particulares. Con la crisis económica que estamos enfrentando en el país, la cultura y las artes han sido directamente afectadas. Es una gran pena porque el arte y el cine puertorriqueño cuentan con muchísimos actores, artistas, y cineastas talentosos.
Decidimos que en medio de este ambiente de crisis es muy importante no parar de crear arte, hacer películas, y contar historias de lo que pasa aquí en PR. Por eso decidimos hacer una película que se puede filmar en una semana con pocas locaciones, pocas actrices y un "crew" reducido.
Hemos recortado el presupuesto al mínimo, y a pesar de la crisis, algunos pequeños y medianos negocios locales se han unido como auspiciadores, ¡les agradecemos profundamente! También, la directora está invirtiendo sus fondos personales para asegurarse que esta película se pueda lograr. Pero no podemos solas, necesitamos su ayuda.
Al ser un proyecto patrocinado por Fractured Atlas, una organización de servicios artísticos sin fines de lucro, las contribuciones para lograr realizar Mareas a la deriva deben hacerse a "Fractured Atlas" únicamente y son deducibles de contribuciones en la medida permitida por la ley.
Además de ser una donación deducible para propósitos contributivos, también le estaremos eternamente agradecidos y tendrá la posibilidad de ser parte de la creación de un nuevo cortometraje donde destacamos el talento y las historias puertorriqueñas.

¿Cuándo estará terminada la película?
La película estará terminada en junio del 2024, y ahí empezará a distribuirse en festivales y en plataformas digitales al rededor del mundo para compartir el talento y el arte de Puerto Rico!

Camelia es una actriz puertorriqueña de cine y teatro. Estudió actuación en NYU Tisch School of the Arts en el estudio Playwrights Horizons. Recientemente, protagonizó la obra de teatro Los García en San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Gabriela es una actriz cubana de cine y teatro. Estudió actuación en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras, y luego hizo su maestría en Juilliard. Recientemente, protagonizó el cortometraje Monserrate, dirigido por Michael Justiniano, en San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Denise es una actriz, cantante y modelo puertorriqueña. Estudió actuación en el New York Film Academy. Fue coronada Miss Universe en 2001 representando a Puerto Rico. Tiene varios años de experiencia como actriz y cantante en Puerto Rico y Estados Unidos, tanto en teatro, cine, y televisión.

Me apasiona muchísimo el cine, y mi sueño siempre ha sido dirigir una película en Puerto Rico. Por eso, para mi tesis decidí producir y grabar en San Juan. No importa lo que escriba, de alguna manera siempre termino escribiendo sobre Puerto Rico. Los problemas que enfrenta mi comunidad inspiran las historias que cuento. Habiendo crecido en Puerto Rico durante una crisis prolongada, viendo comunidades enteras desplazadas por la gentrificación, empujando a muchos a Estados Unidos, estoy interesado en capturar una experiencia que conozco muy bien de ambos lados; un lado que guarda el resentimiento y la tristeza que se fomenta cuando un ser querido decide irse, y el otro lado que guarda el deseo de seguir conectados después de haber tomado esa decisión. Me encanta explorar el Puerto Rico contemporáneo y su gente a través de mi arte, particularmente historias sobre mujeres, sus seres imperfectos y complejos y sus relaciones entre sí. In less than a month we're shooting Mareas a la deriva (Drifting Tides) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mareas a la deriva is the thesis film by director Camila Rodríguez López and producer Valentina Eguiguren Armbruster.
THE FILM
Four years after moving to New York, MAITE's(Camelia Muñiz) older sister, SOFÍA (Gabriela Saker), visits San Juan to celebrate her mother, PATRICIA's (Denise Quiñones), birthday. Maite y Patricia meet a new version of Sofía, which generates tensions in the family dynamic, and causes Maite to ponder how her life would change if she decided to follow in her sister's footsteps and leave Puerto Rico. Throughout the film, we explore the grief and resentment of the people who stay, the desire to fit into a place where you no longer belong, and the complex love each character has for each other and the places they call home.
This screenplay was part of the official selection of the National Film Festival for Talented Youth in Seattle, and with the mentoring and resources it received at this festival, it is being produced as the director's thesis short film at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in the undergraduate Film and TV Production Program.
With the cast and crew we've put together, we believe that Mareas a la deriva will be a visually, sonically, and emotionally powerfully (and lighthearted!) short film. While image and sound is planned in great detail to convey the subjective emotional journey of the main character, the actors will be given the freedom to improvise over scripted dialogue, contributing to the fresh, heartfelt and playful tone we want the film to have.
THE CAMPAIGN
Why are we seeking donations?
The shoot starts in less than a month and we still need $15,000 to cover production and post-production costs.
The majority of our budget goes towards meals for cast and crew, location fees and transportation. Our crew works diligently without pay, so we want to feed them generously on set as a thank you for their time. The rest will go to equipment and production design. These are all tools that will help us create a more believable world and a more professional looking movie.
Making independent films is hard anywhere, but here in Puerto Rico the film community is facing particular challenges. With the economic crisis that we are facing in the country, culture and the arts have been directly affected. It is a great shame because Puerto Rican art and cinema has many talented actors, artists, and filmmakers.
We decided that in the midst of this crisis it is very important to not stop creating art, making films, and telling stories about what is happening here in PR. That's why we decided to make a movie that can be filmed in a week with few locations, few actresses and a small crew.
We have cut the budget to a minimum, and despite the crisis, some small and medium-sized local businesses have joined as sponsors, we thank them deeply! Also, the director is investing her personal funds to ensure that this film can be achieved. But we can't do it alone, we need your help.
As a project sponsored by Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts services organization, contributions towards the making of Drifting Tides must be made to "Fractured Atlas" only and are deductible from contributions to the extent permitted by law.
In addition to being a deductible donation for tax purposes, we will also be eternally grateful and you will have the opportunity to be part of the creation of a new short film where we highlight Puerto Rican talent and stories.
Also, we've made a list of rewards: Depending on how much you can contribute, you can receive a signed copy (by the cast and crew) of the script, private access to a stream of the finished film when it comes out, a signed poster, photographs and videos from bloopers and behind-the-scenes moments - and much more!
When will the film be finished?
The film will be finished in June 2024, and then it will begin to be distributed in festivals and on digital platforms around the world to share the talent and art of Puerto Rico!

THE CAST
CAMELIA MUÑIZ es MAITE Camelia is a Puerto Rican film and theater actress. She studied acting at NYU Tisch School of the Arts at the Playwrights Horizons studio. Recently, she starred in the play Los García in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
GABRIELA SAKER es SOFÍA Gabriela is a Cuban film and theater actress. She studied acting at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, and then did her MFA at Juilliard. Recently, she starred in the short film Monserrate, directed by Michael Justiniano, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
DENISE QUIÑONES es PATRICIA Denise is a Puerto Rican actress, singer and model. She studied acting at the New York Film Academy. She was crowned Miss Universe in 2001 representing Puerto Rico. She has several years of experience as an actress and singer in Puerto Rico and the United States, both in theater, film, and television.

Director's statement: I am very passionate about cinema, and my dream has always been to direct a film in Puerto Rico. Therefore, for my thesis I decided to produce and record in San Juan.
No matter what I write, somehow I always end up writing about Puerto Rico. The issues facing my community inspire the stories I tell. Having grown up in Puerto Rico during a prolonged crisis, seeing entire communities displaced by gentrification, pushing many to the United States, I am interested in capturing an experience that I know very well from both sides; one side that holds the resentment and sadness that is fostered when a loved one decides to leave, and the other side that holds the desire to stay connected after having made that decision. I love exploring contemporary Puerto Rico and its people through my art, particularly stories about women, their imperfect and complex beings and their relationships with each other. This piece allows me to do just that.
