Co-created by Tom Truss and Matthew Cumbie, ReWritten reflects on the intimate relationship between Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne as a way to explore queerness, history, intimacy, and writing. The relationship between Hawthorne and Melville has been characterized as one of the most mysterious and fruitful friendships in American letters, yet the letters from Hawthorne to Melville are missing. ReWritten springboards from this historic gap and time-hops between then and now as an attempt to expand how we see ourselves in these stories, asking questions like: What can you write that you can’t say out loud? When was the last time you wrote of love? Where can you find yourself in the words and worlds of the past, and when have you had to write your own story?

The holidays are a time to celebrate the past as we look to the future. This week only we are asking for your help, as we celebrate all that we have collectively accomplished and look to future performances and a premiere of ReWritten! During our Flash Fundraiser this week, we need to raise $2,000. These needed funds will go towards

  • completing our (stunning) set by Jeremy Winchester
  • bringing composer Summer Kodama to the Berkshires to create original music

Over the next week, we will share updates about where ReWritten has been and what has unfolded over the past three years, and give some glimpses about what’s ahead. Your financial gift of any size will support our team of independent artists in coming together to culminate our work that has been called “empowering and deeply healing,” and referred to as “a meditation on who gets to tell stories.”
