Two brothers uncover their mother’s past in Nazi-occupied Hungary, revealing surprising insights into their grandmother's potential collusion with the SS at Auschwitz. The authentic bloodline connection between their mother and the woman they call "grandmother" is questioned.
Brief Story Synopsis:
In the feature documentary film Rose's Diary, brothers Steve and Dan explore their mother, Judith's experiences growing up in a Budapest orphanage during the Holocaust. A pivotal moment arises when, at 14, Judith unknowingly learns that her birth mother, Rose, survived Auschwitz and is now living in America. Validating the genuine bloodline connection between their mother and the woman they refer to as "grandmother" is akin to unraveling the threads of a delicate family tapestry. This revelation shifts the narrative and raises questions about their grandmother's life before, during, and after the Holocaust.
Steve conducted an informal interview with Judith in 2009, which he resurrected. While in Auschwitz, Rose kept a diary. Judith's oral history and Rose's WWII diary served as vital sources of information. Collaborations with individuals who knew Rose and Judith, including distant relatives, enriched the narrative. Their trip to Hungary and Auschwitz is carefully planned to connect with their heritage, uncover hidden stories, and potentially bridge gaps in their understanding of their mother and grandmother. They aimed to dedicate the diary and Rose's Auschwitz uniform to a Holocaust Museum, hoping to honor and preserve these and other survivors' stories for future generations.
