Toby is an intergalactic tourist who returns to a certain town over and over, drawn by its two unusual qualities: first, time is nonlinear. That is, he wakes up one day and it's early winter; he wakes up the next day and it's late summer. 

Its other unusual quality is the Lovers, a woman and a man, who appear at different places around the town each day, and are also out of sync with time. For example, one day the woman will be a child and the man, an adult; the next day, the woman will be an elder and the man a teenager, and so on. 

The tourists’ main pastime is tracking down the Lovers each day, and putting their lives together as if assembling a giant puzzle. The tourists know that, at one time or another, the two were married....but no one has ever witnessed their wedding day.

Toby is determined to be the first.
