Movement Interrupted is a photographic and film‑based project honoring former dancers whose careers were cut short by life‑altering events such as accidents, injuries, or acute health conditions. Through intimate portraiture and video storytelling, the project celebrates their resilience, individuality, and enduring connection to movement—offering inspiration to young dancers facing similar challenges and challenging the belief that a dancer’s artistry ends when their career does.
The project is led by photographer and director Roy Schweiger, based between New York and Milan, whose work centers on human resilience and the transformation of personal stories into visual narratives.
Why this work matters: Dance careers are uniquely fragile—deeply tied to physical ability and vulnerable to sudden disruption. When an unexpected event ends a dancer’s path, they face profound identity shifts, loss of community, and the challenge of redefining themselves beyond the stage. Many of these stories remain unheard. Movement Interrupted seeks to celebrate courage, offer visibility to dancers navigating similar struggles, and challenge the assumption that artistry disappears when a career ends.
How the project will be created: The process begins with in‑depth personal conversations to understand each dancer’s journey. Each participant will be photographed in a portrait tailored to their personality and resilience, accompanied by filmed interviews and movement‑inspired visuals. The artistic language balances intimacy and strength, ensuring dignity, empowerment, and authenticity.
Outcomes: A 2027 exhibition, a published book, and a long‑term ripple effect inspiring dancers, artists, and audiences to face life’s challenges with courage and creativity. Screenshot 2025-11-03 at 12.55.33 PM.jpg192.8 KB
